57th annual Maryland Steam Historical Society Show

The show is located in Arcadia Maryland, about 8 miles north of Reisterstown, MD, or about 20 miles south of Hanover, PA, right off MD Rt 30. Here is the weblink:http://marylandsteam.org/mshsweb/

    Garden 2010

With winter seemingly out of breath here in Maryland, I figured its time to start the annual garden thread. With a little prodding from my Dad, we've decided to upgrade the garden fence a bit. Using 6x6 posts, and 2"x4" horse fencing to deter the critters, we are on the way to enclosing a...

Here are a couple of pictures of the snow here in Central MD to get the thread started.

    Fitting Bushinngs

I made an attempt to install a bronze sleeve bushing into a clutch pressure plate whose center hole was dogged out. I had a 3/4 inch drill bit and a 5/8 x 3/4 inch bushing. The inside diameter of the bushing rode smoothly over the unworn portion of a drive shaft, so that wasn't really an issue...

Yellow Jackets and other Stinging Insects

Here are a couple of anecdotes I can relate to y'all about my run-ins with yellow jackets. Yellow jackets will seek out any hollow area that will give them shelter, a piece of pipe behind a shed, a hollow tree, or a rotten stump will all be prime real estate for those little yellow and black...

Richard B. Nice job so far on the 127. One nice thing about doing the wiring harness yourself is that you'll know every inch of it, which should make troubleshooting easier, at least for you. From what I can tell, it looks like a first class job. Have you had the chance to fire it up yet?

Lewis, Recoil starters off of another Cub might be hard to come by, but Kohler built a lot of engines in the 7-8 horsepower range that were used on water pumps, portable generators, etc, that probably would work on your Cub engine.

Richard, You can always try using the pads and mandrel in an electric drill, or perhaps see if Harbor Freight or the equivalent has an electric die grinder you can use.

    Motorcycle Lift for Cubbies

I got the bright idea of buying one of those Harbor Freight motorcycle lifts to assist me working on my Honda Shadow. Unfortunately, after I got it together I found out that I really can't use it for it's intended purpose, as the bike has lots of engine bits sticking out below the frame in all...

I was able to catch the UPS guy as he brought the wrong Heim joints that I ordered yesterday to my door, and was able to turn them around. The right ones should be here tomorrow. I picked up a clutch disk, teaser spring, and a couple of roll pins at the local Cub dealer, so I've got my project...

    Grapes, Anyone?

I decided I couldn't wait any longer to pick my Seyval grapes. The birds and the bees were starting to take interest, and their toll was getting worse by the day, while the sugar content of the grapes seems to have peaked. Nonetheless, I managed to pick about 275 lbs of grapes off of about 20...

    Backfires

Many of my older pieces of lawn and garden equipment (which is most of them) seem to have problems with backfires a second or two after shutting them off. On my Cubs and my Simplicity riding mower, this results in a loud gunshot like BANG, but other than making my ears ring it seems to do little...

Guys, A rough morning up here, the storm left about 4 inches of sleet, which roughly translates to over a foot of snow. Got out at the crack of dawn, with the storm apparently winding down, and had some success with the 129 moving some of the sleet with the blower, but the wide slick tires...

    Ford trucks anyone????

Matt, I've had a couple of mid '90s F-series, a 93 2wd XL I brought new, and a '94 4x4 XL I replaced it with last year. Both had the 300 cid 6, and on the '93 it was about the only thing that I didn't have issues with in the truck's lifetime. I had 182,000 on it when I replaced it last year...

It's actually gotten colder since earlier this morning. The outside thermometer said 48 degrees at 9, coming up on 11 it's 44.6. At this rate I will have to get the old 102 ready for snow. I was hoping to give it a new mechanical heart first, but the 129 project is filling the garage right now.

Ed, if the PTO is pretty well hopeless, you might be able to get it off by taking the front pieces out and accessing the end of the crankshaft. The body of the PTO in front of the clutch disk rides on a large ball bearing pressed onto the crankshaft, and the setscrews dig into a ring just behind...
