300 to much in my opinion. IF it does need a camshaft, it's going to need a lot more than that, especially if it's a Series 1 engine.
Looks to include wheel weights and the mule drive, sounds like it could be an “engineless roller.”
Sure a desirable model, for someone with the resources, resourcefulness, and wherewithal.
Can you obtain the unit’s S/N? Might help iD which engine it shelled.

$300 to much? Guess that depends if they are laying around all over the place or one has to really hunt to find one decent enough to make into something. I looked for over 3 years to find one that had not already been refurbished or better for under a grand. They are not that plentiful around for sale in the Midwest. I had one spotted and took a year to buy it for $400 complete with hub caps and 50" deck. You do not have to go back with a Kohler engine either.

That is an IH built 782. The patent decal and the lack of front frame holes proves this. Originally that would have been a KT17 series 1, which isn't worth messing with. I would at minimum swap a Magnum 18 or Command 18-up in it.
That is worth $300-$400 all day every day including Sunday! That appears to be a clean unit to build.

Does it come with a mower deck? If not, I'm with Charlie, about $100-150 over what I'd spend personally. If it has a deck in as good of shape as the tractor, then I feel I'd be good but I'd try to knock off $50-100...
As 1811 suggests, you'd want to swap out the motor. M18 would probably be the route I'd take, although with a little more work, a Command would be worth it.
That's a really clean looking unit (by the picture alone).
You may be able to grab an M18 for $200-300 depending on where you live.
I'd search for a few motors first and see what you can find and what you'd have in it when it's all said and done...

"Needs a camshaft" could very well turn into a major overhaul. Only guessing but a minimum of $1000 for a rebuild? Now you have 782 with a minimum of $1400 invested. What are you going to use it for? You may then have to rebuild the deck, if it has one. Are you going to flip it like on TV? As they often say on TV, "there's not much meat left on the bones" if you pay $400.

You aren't going to be 'rebuilding' a Series I KT-17. All of the parts specific to that version have been discontinued for decades. As 1811Cub says, it's engine swap time.
I have ~$2500 in my 1872. Maybe half that in my 782. Neither are worth what I have in them, but go see what $1400 or even $2500 will buy you new, and the value of one of these all mechanically sorted out will be pretty obvious.

I agree, that's why I have the old Cubs.
Even if one was to completely restore one, with the money invested, it's still cheaper and lasts longer than anything bought new today.
But, I believe the super commands a good price. With what you've done to your's Matt, I bet you'd get your $2,500...
When I was looking, the average price was $2,500-3,000. Then again, here in Cubsylvania, supers just don't seem to be as common as you'd think. You can find sooooo many IH Cubs everywhere you turn though.
Almost tempting me to buy up a bunch and haul them to buyers/collectors where they aren't as popular...
Never hurts to try and negotiate. It does look pretty clean and has wheel weights. Anything else come with it? If it has a snow blower or blade, that will add to the value.
I gave 250 ish for a ccc 682 with a 38" deck and a series 2 kt a few years ago. I had to get it running which entailed a coil and cleaning the carb. Needs some other things but waiting on the back burner.
Also picked up an ih built 782 a year or so later with a rebuilt magnum and a 50c deck for 400 or 500. Location is key for value also. These prices were also before 2020 so....

In PA/NY, you will rarely ever see vintage Cubs go for only $200-$300, regardless of condition.
Jack, I would like to know any one could diagnose a bad cam without tearing down engine>Sounds like a s.w.a.g.
I have a good KT17 s2 motor in the shop. A good chassis would be ideal
I would start with taking the tappit cover off and turning the engine over by hand. I don't know what s.w.a.g. means.
