RPM adjustment on 129
I used my 129 for the first time after adjusting the RPMs to 3430. What a difference. The power and sound was there. I wasn't running flat out but close. I don't think it has ever run at that RPM before. I am glad that I checked it.
I am going to try to get the RPMs to 3600 to see what that does. I also did put the throttle stop back on. It is not doing anything now but I will adjust that later.

Kent, mine went out too, I'm just going to replace with an electric.

Kent, I'm not sure about the Series II. But my series 1 is manual. It's as easy as remove, the left side body cover, olull the left side spark plug. Remove the left side engine tin and the little engine tin on top.

Then 2 large Phillips head screws and 2 hoses and it's out.

Reverse steps to re install.

Earl - I posted the following earlier but addressed it to Nick in error. Please review the following.

Without the stop I can only imagine you're either running the engine at a fixed rpm or you're trying to adjust the governor and throttle shaft linkage to no end. It's just not gonna work and you're risking blowing up your engine.

Besides the throttle stop (little L-shaped part) you need to make sure you have the shouldered sleeve and spring washer so the throttle bracket can rotate freely as you move your throttle cable.

Hopefully you have the governor adjusted correctly and you know where the governor/throttle linkage arm to carb was originally so you can return it to that position. Also, you need to attach the governor spring in the holes like you see in Kraig's pic.

I hope you can locate the little parts you need without to much trouble. Maybe Kraig can even post some additional pics at different angles so you can see all the parts associated with the throttle stop.

I really am fearful you could blow you engine up. I have no idea how you're keeping the rpm's from exceeding their limit without having a throttle stop in place, unless you're just locking the throttle in one position.

Jason W. & Earl F.,

Great pics and advise!
Started doing the Hytrans & filter change after work today and found another problem w/this 1976 1650 w/loader that for now I'm going to live with.

310279.jpg

There was an odd assortment of bolts and studs used to secure the cover on the diff.
When I got it opened up, here is what I found!

310280.jpg

Here's a closer view...

310281.jpg

So, for the time being I've custom cut out a gasket (sans damaged bolt hole), that I've "buttered-up" both sides of & the cover & diff with Permatex "Hi-tack", let them set till almost dry and bolted the 6 out of 7 good ones to 25 ft-lbs. I'm glad it wasn't any of the bottom three that the 3-point bracket and hitch depend on.
If it doesn't leak, I'm inclined to leave well enough alone. If it does, then I might consider loading some stainless 308L wire in the MIG and weld a Gr.#8 stud in place. I've had great results in the past with this 308L &(75%CO2/25%AR gas mix) on both gray and malleable cast iron.

310282.jpg

I'm going to let it all cure for a day or two & fill it up w/Hytrans. I've put on a proper hydraulic filter to replace the Fram PH43 oil filter the P.O. had on there.... sheeze!

Will do the pressure tests in a few days, keep you posted.

Nice tractor Jim, sucks about the rear end though!! My 782 has a leaker on it too where someone tightened the one side bolt too much. Not nice, makes a mess on floor all time. Have to fix it some time soon. Tired of checking Hytran in it all the time too!

Good morning, All. Just checking in. Getting ready for work. Fancy is awaiting his daily "check for bunnies" ride where Fancy and I warm up the Dakota by driving around a three block area, window down and he actually looks for rabbits. Head bumps if he/we sees one.

Jason W. That is just the first load. Dave has since added eight more pallets. He said that he's just downsizing and wants to build a new shed. the old wooden boxcar is in the way. If no one was going to take the parts then he would've scrapped the least valued and sold the rest on fleabay and Craigslist. By taking everything I can help other Cub Cadet people out with FREE parts.

Jim L. If you'd want once I get the parts here, I know that I'll have the housing shlould you want to replace that one.

Thanks Nic! I hope to get a new one next week and dive into that small project.

Jim L, "custom cut rear gasket" Looks Good,,,

Sounds like you've got that issue covered, even if it develops a leak in the future,,, Nice work!!!

Anyone have V61's on front of their Cub? Do you like them? How do they work when you have a heavy blower or loader on front? Find they make easier to steer than regular turf tires? How are they in snow, slide around a lot or dig in ok?

Thinking of putting them on front of 982 to make easier to steer. Thoughts?

Earl, here's a link to some archive pages from back when I was setting the governor on my Killer Kohler in my #2 125. I was having issues getting to 3600 RPM I could get there but then the idle speed would not go low enough. I couldn't find where/if I posted if I ever resolved it but there's some good info posted in the first link for steps to take for adjusting it.

LINK 1

These are the two archives leading up to the one above. Might be interesting reading, might be a waste of time.

Nice detailed pictures Kraig....
You have to look at the set up and just wonder how long it took some one to come up with all that !

Mike P.

All of my SGT's wear V61's......wouldn't put anything else in them!!!!

BTW: RE throttle stop.

It isn't NECESSARY to have one, but it sure is easier. Without one, you have to set the throttle lever to WOT on the dash (mechanically maxed out WOT) then adjust the cable sheath clamp to hold the cable at the position on the engine that generates 3600 rpm WOT. You have to do a little of this anyway, even with the throttle stop.

Throttle stop just gives you an easier method for "tweaking" high end idle.

Earl,

Take her up the rest of the way.....big difference between 3400 and 3600 too!!!!

Steve, you find a big difference in the ease of steering under load? Think I found some used rims for them for $50.00 ? Little more than I wanted to pay but I bet way cheaper than new from what I understand.

I'm with Steve on the V61's. I can't say its any difference in steering feel, as everything but the Wheatland has power steering (and the Wheatland has a 3-turn gearbox and SuperSteer, so it feels great to steer anyways).

The only complaint about the V61's I'd have is they wear pretty quick. My 782 has had them on for a little more than a year and they're about 1/3 worn (at an angle, possibly due to the sharp turn of the SuperSteer). I'll likely buy some again when it comes time.

The Firestone is an alternative I suppose, but for $40 a pair more, I just can't stand that single-rib rice tire look. (yes, I know it's a 3-rib, but it looks like only one rib would ever touch the ground)

My V61's are wearing decent, perform well in snow, grass, loose dirt, etc. All mine are on PS tractors except my 582 and it steers well with them on.

Wyatt nailed it on the Firestone tri rib......I would ONLY buy that tire if I was making a 1/4 scale replica of a rice/cane special.......it looks like a RICE TIRE!!!!

I will buy V-61's for all of my 16x6.50 and 18x8.50 needs.....

Sorry to hear about the rear cover Jim L. I've been dealing with leaky hydro's for a year now. I've been having a hard time finding the correct tap so I can drill out the new covers I have. However cleaning out the shed I came across a random tap, have to check its size for sure, markings worn off, but I think I finally have it.
You must have some great welding skills to even want to try cast iron!
