Oh BOY... I LOVE ONAN Engines..... NOT!!!!

Get done mowing the last blade of grass for the season, idle the engine on the 982 down and shut the mower deck off and the engine starts hunting at idle, almost stalls then revs up to the speed i have the idle at... then does it all over again. Think I'll start with new ign. points & condenser this time instead of doing it LAST like last time. I guess it could be worse, like being a K532 Kohler that NOBODY makes parts for anymore.
 
Dennis F - not that this applies in your case, but does anyone repower these 982 tractors? Off hand I'm thinking there!s more room under the hood than a 782? If so, whats the engine of choice?
 
Bill, all the 82 series tractors have the exact same engine compartment. The size difference is from the tunnel back. The engine of choice would be a Mag20. But the my knowledge, it would require the entire wiring harness too. But considering that technically an off topic engine already, and if $$ is of plenty. A Command V-twin will fit too...

If I hauled my 982 out to them in Indiana, left a check for $2000-$2200 and waited a month they'd put a 23 HP B&S Vangard in for me and create the kit. I know of several 23 HP V-gard powered 682/782's around, so what Nic says about the 982 being the same as a 682/782 under the hood is right.

I will say this, even though I'm not large or tall, I do really like the ability to stretch out on the SGT's. It's kinda like going from the back seat in a Ford Escort to the back seat in a Lincoln Town Car. More room and the ride is so much better because of the long wheel base wider track & bigger tires.

Last night I installed a new-to-me set of 2 link chains onto my 1650. After reading some struggles earlier this week I thought I can handle these much like I have in the past.

I simply threw the chains on the Right rear tire, hooked together or clipped the inside then clamped the outside of the chains and I was done, I then moved onto the left rear. Simply was not the word to use for this side, clipping or clamping or hooking the inside was the same but I could not get the outside of the chains to even come close. I let the air out of the tire, and using large pliers I got it to work but this left side is TIGHT.

MY dad showed me how to put chains on many years ago on our Farm tractors, I've installed chains on my Cub Cadets many times. I think I got what I paid for(free) when I obtained this new set. Maybe the links are shorter or smaller on the one, I know there's 11 links across the tire on both sides. I don't know what the difference is, but after I got it done I figured I'd worry about it sometime after I take them off next spring. Maybe next year I'll use the other set I have and hang this set on a peg

I hope you don't think I'm O/T talking about my 982, because it VERY CLEARLY says International Harvester, Chicago, ILL on the serial number plate.

Maybe you think Tony is O/T with his JCB, but we were discussing installing tire chains, I talked about chaining up my Farmall, still IH, not CC, and Tony responded comedically. But since Shultzie & I got Tony to wear Long-Johns, we're done with that thread for now.

VINCE - When you take those chains off next spring and hang them up, make sure both chains are the same length. Maybe count the links in the four side chains for now. I bet one is a couple links shorter than the other.

Tire chains ARE FEMALE. They reserve the right to be supple, compliant, esay to get along with, and then change 180 dgrees in a split second. The Onan in my 982 is female too. I haven't named It or the tractor. I normally refer to it as "The RED Tractor", although there's two other red tractors here.
 
Dennis, that's what I plan to do. My first thought was these are both 2 link chains, why does this one seem shorter same amount of extra links at the end. I bet there's one less cross traction part on the stubborn one. I certainly know there's a bigger gap between the first and last cross links on this left side. Had I tried it first(before the right side) I'd have given up and put on my other set, or one of my other sets chains.
