Mike P - I don't think you can point to a single specific item. I'd start with the basics - my initial thought is your carb mixture is to rich but before you check the carb adjustments make sure your air filter is not plugged up (causing a to rich mixture). I don't think it would be the spark plug itself, but I suppose it could be the plug wire. It could be points out of adjustment causing the timing to be off. Those are the first things I'd look at. I guess it could be your muffler is shot/partially blocked, and getting red hot because the exhaust gases can't fully escape. If it's not these then it's likely something happening internal (really out of my league) with a valve or even the cam.

Dennis F and Bill J - just saw this statement by Dennis' and thought it worth a slight clarification:
"While the larger 169 mufflers & air cleaners will fit right on any smaller 10 to 14 HP CC engine, they weren't really "Options". You could buy them as parts and add them after you got the tractor."

The 169 muffler will not fit right on the smaller 10 to 14hp engines. The large supposedly "Quiet" muffler for the 16hp has a straight inlet fitting that connects to an S shaped pipe coming out of the 16hp block. The "Quiet" muffler for the 10-14hp Kohler engines has a "J" or curved inlet pipe and I believe you have to remove the exhaust pipe coming out of the block and add a nipple before you can connect the correct 10-14hp "Quiet" version muffler. You can actually still buy the Quiet version for the 10-14hp (at least Charlie and some others have them), but I've not seen anyone have a correct 16hp version for several years. I believe these mufflers were made by Nelson, and also used on non-CC applications as well. I happened across a slightly different version several years ago when I couldn't find a new correct one for my restored 169. It has about a 6" long output pipe which I like to keep the exhaust away from the hood and S/G. The original Quiet muffler has a stubby 2" which barely clears the hood. I'll attach a couple pics of my restored 169 so you can see the long pipe coming out of the muffler and how it clears the S/G and hood. I actually think it's fairly quiet.

Here are the 2 pics for the below message.

So I read the 16 hp on the 169 really has a lot of power and torque too. Any reason the 16 hp on the 1650 would have any power difference than the 169? If one were to chain a 169 to a 1650 and have a pull, would it be a draw - no real advantage from one machine to another? It seems to me the next best thing in a single cylinder Kohler would be a 1650 in absence of a 169. I'm thinking the 1650 would make a very good moldboard plow tractor as well as a very good driver for a 50 inch deck too.

My 1650 had/has a 14 hp engine, but I found and bought a while back a K341AQS that came from a QL tractor. I think I'm going to do a rebuild on that engine at some point and use it in the 1650. As I said earlier, it is a 12 fin engine.

Interesting stuff.

Took the day off work....went to the local steel supplier and picked up 110# of steel, then worked on this until I ran out of welding wire a few minutes ago........

Harry,

That 169 looks so good that, were it mine, I would be afraid to run it. Beautiful, beautiful restoration.

I can only hope that the 1250 nightmare will look half that good when I get done with it.

STEVE B. - What.... No variable width plow frame? No Toggle-trip or spring trip plow bottoms? So it's a half scale 535 plow, not a 720 or 735.

Anyhow, it looks AWESOME. You're going to be busy to get it done by PD.

And what will be nice, is when you drop it in the ground the first time and it plows as nice as it looks!
