Bernie - It's normal in my garage, since I didn't remove the cam. Kind of a pain to have to adjust the nuts, but that's what I did. Also a pain getting it back together (getting the keepers in place) with old arthritic fingers in that crowded little recess, but that just made it more satisfying when I finally got it done!

In that last pic you posted you can see a BIG CRACK in the block. It's at the top right of the pic, or since you have engine rotated in the pic the crack is actually along the lower right of the valve cover opening. I think your block is DONE FOR.
 
I haven’t noticed a crack??

There is a small hole in the left side of the valve opening. Looks like it is supposed to be there.

That is awfully funny, all the k's I have worked on I do not remember a hole being there. Looks like there may be a crack leading from that hole.
 
Matt, Bernie, et al - ok, I can't really see the crack in the other pics so I copied the original pic, rotated it and drew a circle over what sure looks to me like a CRACK!!! Have a look and you tell me if it is.

I think it's justb a build up of deposited crud in that area of the casting where it changes shape.
A quick swipe or two with a wire brush would answer that question.

Here is a pic of my 301 on the bench that shows the aforementioned questionable (not) hole in the left side if the valve spring housing.

Thank you David Schwandt for sharing and posting the Kohler Engines Single Cylinder Engine Service Manual for K-Series Engines (Issued 4/1990 & Revised 11/1992). Excellent reference! Can anyone please recommend reputable expert engine rebuilders for the Kohler K-241AS 10HP engine that was originally installed on my October 1964 IH Cub Cadet 100? Thank you.

Bernie - how about posting another pic taken just like the one where I added the circle, but after you clean that area off. That sure looks like a crack to me in the pic I drew the circle on. Could it just be "a confluence of shadows"?

I believe Matt is right. It looks like grime build up, casting a shadow with the camera flash. The shadow does look like a crack.
 
Thanks for all the help! I downloaded the service manual and printed out the sections on disassembly. Everything apart just need to get things to machine shop.

Still want to measure piston to see what was in the motor. Only marking on top is a letter A. Some numbers on the underside of the piston “235002“.

I think A was a style reference. The service manual has info on the markings. Different styles used different rings
if I recall.
