Michael R - A new filter and Hy-Tran is a must do. Until I brought it home, my 123 lived most of its life outside. When I popped the rear cover, I got a little Hy-Tran (or some oil-like substance) and a lot of water. I jacked up the front of the tractor to get most of the residual goop out...

    On the soapbox again

$3.80+ a gallon here in Western Oregon. Unless everyone stays home this summer and demand drops precipitously, I'm sure that a gallon of gas will take nearly all of a five dollar bill before school starts.

Kraig - To clarify: When you've installed a PTO clutch bearing with a snap ring in place, there have been no problems with the bearing not being flush with the end of the shaft?

I bet it would also help to change the filter more than once every 10-15 years...

Thanks Matt. That's how I installed it, but then I started to second guess myself... Charlie - It's going on a K-301 in a 123. The bearing in question is #12 below and came from my local IH dealer in a MTD bag. Came with a locking collar (#13) too.

Another PTO clutch bearing question: The service manual says to install the bearing flush with the end of the crankshaft. The new bearing that I have has a thin wire snap ring on the inside that prevents the bearing from being flush on the crankshaft by about 1/8". So, do I remove the snap ring...

My Super A's service manual outlines a procedure to polarize a generator after it has been off of the tractor. I've looked through my service and owner's manual for my 123 and I'm with Art - I don't see a S/G polarization procedure listed. The owner's manual does discuss a prohibition on jumping...

Kraig, I read that exact text in the manual and never picked up on the engine rotation deal. DUH! Thanks!

Art / Kraig - Thanks for the heads-up. The end of the shaft & keyway is indeed a bit banged up. I'll spend some more time with the wire brush and file to clean things up. Another related question. A locking collar came in the same bag with the bearing. I also got a separate locking collar...

Should the PTO bearing (#12 below) be a pretty tight fit on the crankshaft, or should it slide onto the crank easily like a S/G pulley?

    Ok Dennis. How about this:

Re: Elvis Sighting I don't think that's Elvis - He's not fat enough! The lad on that 123 is dressed a little too nicely. Perhaps he had to dash off to appear on American Bandstand after finishing with the lawn. Since the high level IH suits made their decisions from downtown Chicago, they...

Jason - This isn't a great picture, but the arrow points to where the lever is mounted. To the right, there is the PTO rod w/ turnbuckle.

Thanks Matt. Dumb question now: Is there a quick way to know if the steel in question has been hardened?
