Would a older cast Trans/rear end be a direct replacement for the aluminum one in my 1872

Johnny: Forum member Matt Gonitzke swapped one out a few years back, I don't think it was exactly straight-forward, but I forget what the issues were. You might try searching on his name, or contact him directly.

Johnny - I believe it is a straight forward swap. Steve Blunier could fill you in more since he has done a few.

It is only a direct swap if using a transmission from a 982. If using something else, the driven reduction gear must be changed. You may as well use the carrier and axles from the 1872 as well, since I have heard of a number of people twisting off the older coarse-spline axles in a super.

thanks guys. im having probs keeping bolts tight got one strip, that all causes leaks.matt is the reduction gear what the hydro connects with.does it require complete dissasembley to change

Yes and yes. You need to read and understand the transaxle disassembly/reassembly instructions for the rearend from both the IH and CCC manuals. My website has some of the info under the '1872' page but complete understanding of both manuals is a necessity or you will mess something up.
