I put new rings, valves, etc in the briggs for my Spirit of 76. I was able to get it to turn over with the new starter a couple of times, then cough once. Now I can't get it to turn over.

So, I took it apart again, and with the bottom cover and the head off, I have a dog of a time spinning it over by hand. I have to use a screwdriver in the flywheel, and even then it is hard to do.

Is this normal for a ring job?

Secondly, I found oil on top of the piston when I pulled the head. Is this a sign of something I did wrong?

Thanks.

Steve,
Were the new parts Briggs and Straton?
It could be one of the following:
The ring cap is too tight. You may have the wrong size rings for the bore.
Next area I would check is the connecting rod if you change it. You could have an undersize rod on a standard size crank.
Did You use an assembly lube when put the motor back together?
Was the crank end play in specs?

I have rebuild 2 Spirit of 76 motors. Rings, piston and connecting rod were replace in both. Both turn over by hand.

My email address is in my profile if you need more help.

hard cranking...
there's a topside and bottomside on rings
there's a correct order of placement
there's oversize rings in a standard bore
there's incorrect end gap needing filed (to tight)
broke rings
no lube
rod cap backwards (?)
rod cap over-torqued

oil on top of piston ...
engine rolled over
all ring gaps lined up
exessive oil left in cylinder for pre-lube

take your pic

In other words, I have to tear it down again. I was afraid of that.

Thanks

Turns out the rod cap was on too tight. I guess my german torque speck was too tight.
