The adapter studs were tapered on both sides so that they pilot on the centers of the holes, same concept as the taper on the nuts. It makes sense because then you're not depending on the threaded surface of the stud to locate the adapter, flattening threads, wearing the holes, etc.
I'm sure someone will chime in and back me up on this. I can't be the only one out there with their original hardware for these.
