BOB P, & all. Back years ago, say about 1969/70 I got so good at replacing head gaskets in the K161 in the old 70 If the engine was cool I could R&R one in a half hour with hand tools. Right where Jame's head is torched was where they ALL went. You probably are all wondering "WHY didn't you sand the head flat?" That would have required something flat like a piece of glass, etc. to begin with. That wasn't available on the farm, would have required a trip to town and the local machine rebuilders shop. New gaskets were rather cheap, my labor was free, so we replaced head gaskets. I torqued and re-torqued them properly, tried alum. paint as a sealer, Copper-Coat, etc.

I almost drilled/tapped a new head bolt hole in that spot, wouldn't have needed to be as big as all the others, even a short 1/4" bolt with a nut & washer under the deck of the block would have worked.

There was a nice wiring diagram posted around May 29th for a 71,102,etc. I thought I saved it, but evidently not.

Could someone please post it again? I tried to look in the "vault", but the most recent posts I could pull up were in 06'.
Thanks guys

Yesterday was a good cub cadet day. Saved a 126 from a junk yard and by dark had it running. Po put wrong S/G on it. Had engine turning wrong way.

GREAT SAVE & GREAT FIX, MEL!!

Now we need a pic of the purring new-to-your-CC herd 126!

Ken, Having the wire rust up so it will not feed is a pain! Have lost two whole spools in this soggy weather here. Any idea what the maker fogs into the bags when they ship it, I keep thinking that most oils will mess up the welds????

Did the spring assist come on a new 71? Mine has it but there are white brackets on the bottom of the trans and the rear spring bracket is white. Makes me think it was for a blade. The PO said his gramps had a blade but it was long gone.

Bob G - That sounds like a Brinly Spring Assist. The ones I've seen pics of had white brackets.

Jerry B -

Desiccant might work. I've saved a bunch of little packs over the years but never have used them or kept up with them.

James M.,
That's the one! THANKS!
Kentucky,
Thanks for all the info, it helped a lot!! BTW how did the fishing trip go?
ALL,
Will a 71 headlight panel fit on a 122?
Melody S., or anyone,
Can you explain more about the wrong S/G turning the motor backwards?
1a_scratchhead.gif

Marty - Some S/G's turn the other direction , the ones that would have the engine turned around from being in backwards like our Cubs. Sometimes when a Starter shop rebuilds them they do something that makes them turn backwards too , they have to be told the direction of use before they rebuild it.

I was hurtin' to bad to go, got a pinched nerve reaching to unhook the battery charger. I brought home 10 fish yesterday though so I'm not hurtin' for supper ;)

Really like that wiring diagram for the 71. 102, 122, 123. Is there a similar one for a 1450? What was shown was much clearer and simpler than anything I have seen. My best is three generations old of xerox.

Well that was wrong -----

S/G's that are connected to the PTO side of the engine (crankshaft) are running the wrong direction.

pain pill is working!

Gary - There's b/w scans on the link I posted. Marty's name in blue in my post.

Here you go Marty

I just took the bolt out of the spring for the big split.

Kentuck

You ever hear on an inversion table. you stand up in it strap your ankles in and slowly turn yourself upsidedown. then you just hang for a bit to let your vertibra realign. my brother swears by them. you could still take the pills for fun!
