BOB P, & all. Back years ago, say about 1969/70 I got so good at replacing head gaskets in the K161 in the old 70 If the engine was cool I could R&R one in a half hour with hand tools. Right where Jame's head is torched was where they ALL went. You probably are all wondering "WHY didn't you sand the head flat?" That would have required something flat like a piece of glass, etc. to begin with. That wasn't available on the farm, would have required a trip to town and the local machine rebuilders shop. New gaskets were rather cheap, my labor was free, so we replaced head gaskets. I torqued and re-torqued them properly, tried alum. paint as a sealer, Copper-Coat, etc.
I almost drilled/tapped a new head bolt hole in that spot, wouldn't have needed to be as big as all the others, even a short 1/4" bolt with a nut & washer under the deck of the block would have worked.
