If you don't have compression after you heard the snapping noise, you most likely broke the connecting rod inside the engine. Other causes could be blown spark plug or head gasket or broken piston.
Did you check the oil level before starting the engine after you got it. The most frequent cause of engine failure is running them low on oil.
