Never ind this post. I found what i was looking for.
I just broke the original bakelite pto disengage button on my 71. Where can I get a replacement in bronze or brass? What is the best replacement for this part and how much?

Hey Ed H: That little ole button is NOT bakelite! Its pressed carbon fibre - very close to what you find in pencils....as you noticed they also break like pencil "lead" ...Properly installed they last for years and are relatively inexpensive....

I love the information on this forum!
I always change my hydro filter every year but after reading the FAQ I decided to take off the rear cover and clean it out.
Every step went well and was surprised to find it very clean inside, until the part about popping wheelies.
Something broke, I had hoped it was the driveshaft but all looks good under the tunnel cover.
Any ideas on where to look next?
This is an early 682. Made in 1980.

Thanks

Anybody who owns a 44 or 50 inch mower deck knows that the spindle cover does absolutely no good for keeping out grass and dirt, in fact it probably does more harm holding it in and allowing it to hold moisture causing rust. I try to remove the cover and clean it out good several times in a mowing season and always find it full. I thought seriously about leaving the cover off but the safety issue and the fact that it does help maintain some strength in the deck prevented me from removing it.

Roland Bedell came up with the idea of cutting some holes in the cover to allow you to blow the dirt and grass out with an air wand after each mowing session. He found that it worked good and shared his idea with me, I had never seen anybody do it but I could see the benefits and was immediately interested.

Taking a spare deck cover I had, I took a 1 3/16 inch Greenlee hole punch and cut 4 holes in the back ridge of the cover similar to what he had done. One on each end and two directly behind the center pulley.

Left side of deck mounted on tractor. The hole allows you to blow air through the cover side to side but it is about impossible to get hurt in any way.

Holes in the rear of the cover allow you to blow air in from the front around the center pulley opening and blow the dirt and grass out the back.

After mowing my yard I took it back to the garage and shut the tractor off, blew it out side to side and from the front through the opening around the center pulley, then to test how good a job I had done I started the tractor up and engaged the mower deck and then blew in to see if more grass would come out. I didn't see any more grass exit so it looks like it works well with the mower deck shut off.

I'm not quick to jump on modifications unless I see a definite improvement and no Safety issue, this one looks like a good one to me and I thank Roland for sharing it with me and allowing me to share it here.

44 u spindle belt size
After reading Richards idea on the deck cover I thought I would look inside mine and found it full of cuttings etc so that vent hole cutting looks like a good idea
However I was glad that I looked inside as the spindle belt was really shredded and no adjusment left on the tensioner
Anyone know the spindle belt size on the 44 u deck Tried to find it in archives but no luck
Thanks

Myron, I replaced mine with a nylon bolt & nut I had lying around. That got me going again and I was able to finish the yard. I think it will hold up until I can replace it with a bronze bushing.

Charlie
yes I am putting it in the 1450
Thanks for the link to the belt part # but it would be really helpfull if I can find the dimensions of the belt

Steve,
Here's a pic of my small cream separator collection. Thanks Charlie! Left to Right 1923-1926-1919-1932. ALL IHC's! The one on the far left has the newly plated tank, the others are currently original.

Alan B,
The 44A is listed for the quiet lines.
The 44C is listed for QL's.
In addition, on the 44A there is two different center pullies.
IH-126393-C1...Pulley, Center for 44 In. Mower w/Serial No. 81742 and above.

IH-59703-C3...For 44 In. Mower w/Serial No. 81741 and below.

The decks are interchangeable just the drive belts would need to be changed.

Belt number for the 44A is 954-3004
The 44C lists BELT 3/8 X 78 SL

Gentlemen, I think I have hit the point of no return.

My 782 died in the middle of mowing this weekend. I have no electricity past the solonoid, and the cluster going into the key switch has some melting and charring.

This old girl has nickled and dimed me for the last time. I have push mowed due to break down for the last time.

I am not afraid of hard work, it's just that I am going into the busy season at work, and don't have time to push mow.

So, Do I push it into a corner of my shed and trip over it for a while, or sell it?

I know I need to fix it, and I will, but it is time for a new ride.

Steve T.
First thing I would do is find out how bad the sizzle is under the hood. It might be an easy fix. If it's really bad! A new wiring harness might be in order as it sounds like you have had an ongoing problem that just came to a head on ya.
There's got to a reason and a spot where the sizzle started. If ya find that and fix it, you might be good to go, we hope!

Another little tid-bit for you guys....

The old IH warehouse/block house in Peoria still stands at S.W. Washington St. and MacArthur (Cedar St. Bridge).

Although it's getting pretty faded, the advertising art work is still visible....you can actually see the old IHC logo under the later "tractor" logo....a cool piece of history!!!
