WalMart’s auto center accepts used waste oil from individuals, free of charge. I just use a couple of milk jugs when I turn it in, so as to avoid needing to get the container back from them.
They just ask ya to log a name & address and # of quarts. Easy peasy!

Geez! I live in Rockland County, NY which runs 'Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Facility,' we call it hazmat depot. Oils, chemicals, gasoline, lite bulbs, electronics, pharmaceuticals, you name it. I thought every state did this.

our municipality (Olathe, KS) also has a hazardous household waste collection program, sounds very similar.
but their collection hours are limited, so it is rather less convenient than dropping used oil at WalMarts.

Jack, thanks for bringing the municipal program(s) to our attention. It is certainly a good option for the homeowner with oil/chemicals/paint/etc. to dispose of.

Advance Auto also accepts used oil. I buy my oil in 2 1/2 gallon jugs and use them to recycle.
I also have a friend with an oil burning furnace, if he doesn't need the oil, it goes to Advance.

I have a classic car retoration business. We have some waste oil and gasoline. We use Safety Clean to pick up this stuff. They came this week and took off 10 gallons of oil gasoline. They charged $19.33 per gallon! Is that robbery or not. We will just keep the gasoline and use it on a burn pile or something.

If I was in your area, I'd pay YOU a dollar a gallon for that old gas, and just dilute it in my old Ford. That 5.8 will suck down anything!!!

I guess I'm lucky. In the town I live in in southern California, The recycling center gives you $0.10 a quart for used motor oil. They also take brake fluid, antifreeze, hydraulic oil, tranny fluid, etc, but no cash for those. They always take the usual E-waste. All of it anytime.
I guess it's because in other towns in my area, some idiots actually pour their auto fluids down the storm drains!

A few local service stations have oil burner heaters. They take it from some of us as they've been burned by idiots giving them engine oil with who knows what in it.. Water, antifreeze, etc
Local stores are only stocking Rotella T4 in 3 gallon plastic bags that are in cardboard boxes. Most small diesel engine take 2.5 gallons. They used to sell it in 2.5 gallon jugs. What's the deal with that? Who wants a half gallon BAG of oil laying around? Not to mention the loss of 'old oil ' container.

When I spoke with the office folks at the recycle center, they told me they get paid for the used oil and antifreeze by a contractor who sells it to a refiner near Long Beach.
Current spot price of crude is about $90 a barrel. There are 168 quarts to the barrel. The city is paying $16.80 for a barrel of mostly pre-refined oil, so I'm sure they're making money on this deal.
Because I know this city is litigation savvy, I am sure the contractor has been thoroughly vetted as to the legitimacy of their operations. They've been doing this for over 20 years.

Our small town installed two large tanks in a three-sided enclosure for people to dump their used engine oil. The town sells it to a concern that processes it into industrial fuel.

I shud have added, my Bimmer X5 holds 8 qts oil and it gets changed at my local service station, J & J Automotive, Pearl River. They never ask if I want the old oil back.

I've been using Wally World's Super Tech straight 30 weight diesel engine oil in my Kohler engines for years. It has the necessary zinc in it that today's auto oils don't. Never had an issue of any kind

All SAE30 still has zinc in it. It hasn't been recommended for motor vehicle use in decades. Most of the multi viscosity auto oils do not due to the chance of catalytic converter contamination.

I was always under the impression they stopped using zinc, or greatly reduced it, shortly after the wide spread use of roller lifters as it was no longer needed for lifter/cam wear. Wasnt aware the convertor was even a factor?

This is all kind of a moot point anyway, IMO...the valve springs in a K-series are VERY soft compared to an old car engine with a high lift cam and flat tappets. I have never, ever heard of a K-series cam going flat from using oil that lacks ZDDP.

Not to mention there are some small engines out there with plastic camshafts now...

Matt, I know kawasaki and others have been using plastic cam gears for quite a while now. Is a an oem using a complete plastic cam now?

Plastic engine guts! Engines like this won't be around 60+ years later like the good old bullet-proof, reliable Kohler cast iron K-engines of the past!
