I need to replace head gaskets on a ch18 on a 1864, does the engine need to be removed?

Yeah.

I would remove the engine. The bolts holding the flywheel shroud and intake manifold on are going to be pretty difficult to access without doing so. Good opportunity to clean all the oily junk off the engine and replace the flywheel end crank seal while you are in there, as that usually goes bad on these engines, too.

The 1864 is not an IH machine.
It's CCC/MTD built 1993-'97

You can do a better job with engine out. Quicker too.

I just had to change them on a 2284. Still have not installed the engine back in the tractor but the engine is ready.
