So I just put the engine back into my 682 after cleaning the heads.I ran it yesterday and it ran pretty good! but today I put the deck on. And when I put the throttle about half way the engine starts racing, like it's at full throttle. And also the electric pto turns on slowly,it use to engage very quickly! Can any one help me!

Did you clean the heads your self?!?! Well what i learned, even tho im only 17 That you have to get head work done by a professional. (did i even spell that right?) If you take the head bolts off in the wrong way it will warp the head. I m pretty shure you know that tho. Or when you put the head back on if you dont torq them right you may have a air gap. Depending where it is has a big effect! On mine it was by the exaust valve so it was blowing out exaust. Now on my friends koler it was by the intake so it was sucking in air. He adjusted the carb like crazy and it did the same thing. On half it ran like it was on full. BUT!!! When i put my deck on it does the same thing because the blades start throwing the engine around. I dont know. its kinda hard for me to explane through typing. But yeah check your torq settings and the deck thing might be normal.

I had no referance kuz when i got my cub it wasent running and i fixed it so when i started mowing it wasent a suprise.

Oh yeah i forgot to add this. If you do clean the head by yourself. use a wire brush on a angle grinder. but dont press into it just enough to get all the crap off.

Ok guys, calm down. 1st off, head work doesn't need to be done by a professional. Try to avoid the use of power tools whenever possible when doing this. All it usually takes to clean a head is a good putty knife and razor blade and some WD-40 to soften the carbon deposits. You want to avoid scratching it if you can.

Next, taking the head bolts off "wrong" will not warp the head. The head was already warped by a blown head gasket and/or previous improper installation. To check if the head is warped, place it on a sheet of 1/4" or thicker glass and try to put a .002 feeler gauge under the head. If this goes under the head and into the combustion chamber area anywhere, the head needs to be brought back to flat. To do this you have 2 options. One is to take the head to a machine shop and have them true it up on a milling machine. The other option (what I do) is to get a sheet of 1/4" or thicker glass and clamp a sheet of 220 grit wet/dry sandpaper to it. Wet the sandpaper and, using a circular motion, sand the head until the entire gasket seating surface has been touched by the sandpaper. (This is quite obviously seen when you do this) Check with the feeler gauge again, then reinstall using the manual for the torquing pattern and values and a new head gasket. NEVER re-use old head gaskets. I have used this method many times and never had a problem.

Now...Jochua, you said you put the engine back in after cleaning the heads. If you disconnected the throttle cable and/or governor linkage and reconnected them differently, it may cause the problem you describe. You really need to get the engine manual, available free from the Kohler website.

Anthony C.-

Your picture of the head is scary. Don't use an angle grinder to do that again, it looks like you removed material from the head and it is no longer flat. You need to fix it with the procedure I mentioned before. A blown head gasket will just get worse.

And, I'll add that I'm 18 but I've been at this for four years, so I speak from experience. If you have any questions, ask, I'll try to answer them or clarify anything you don't understand.

Yeah see Matt is that ive always delt with dirtbikes. 2-stroke. I used to have a y.z. 125 and i loosened one bolt too much and it warped the head. I am new to the whole cub thing. I got it maybe 3 months ago? I had a friend help me out with it and his dad is a machineist and so he knew what to do. And i have to say. the kids 14 and hes been around a crap load of koler engines. So idk i guess we can see it from bolth sides. you have VERY good points and i will use those. But the cub runs perfect and im happy. Im just used to dirtbike engines and if you mess up a little bit then your done. So anyways. Thanks for the tips.

jochua, first check your whole throttle- governor setting for any binding. on your clutch, check the air gap setting. i see your a small engine tech, if your a Kohler dealer look up service bulletin #246, this is probably not your problem as it only happens at wot when hot. but i recommend anybody with a KT series or Magnum series Twin to do, for insurance. keep us informed.
