Grant, very simple s/g test..Take apart start post wiring(not FIELD) clean well,put together run jumper wire from pos on batt to start post(just hold it on) if s/g is working it will turn over.Might want to hook an extra ground to s/g frame.If it turns you have bad connections somewhere...many possibilities
 
Grant, one post on s/g is" field"..one post is starter wire ....most have letter stamps beside posts..start may have an "s" or an "a" or none ..Field has an "F" beside it ,the field wire goes to regulator only and has nothing to do with starting..
 
Difficult question to answer for sure.
A lot depends on what extras are on it, such as a creeper, lights, rear lift and associated parts, hydraulic lift, spring assist, etc.
I have seen them listed, ranging from $200 to $1200.
