Lots of snow. Equipment running great. Until now. While running the 149, the voltage meter indicated a slight discharge - about a half a needle width. When I pop the lights on, it deflects to a full tick mark left - indicating a bigger discharge. Normally, there's a charge indicating even with the lights on. I removed the battery (about 1yr old), brought it in and put it on trickle charge overnight. Started right up this morning but with the same meter indications. I tried to clear and dry off all voltage regulator contacts (thinking that there was a short developing from the blowing snow). Any suggestions?

Tom B., You're right, winds howling and snows coming down hard. ( careful what you wish for ) Almost time to venture out and see if the 127 will start. It's a lot easier to throw 10" twice than 20" once.

o yeah kraig, with all ur lights on is ur voltage meter slammed all the way charging?

Mike F., do you have a voltmeter to measure what the voltage is when your 149 is running? Check on the previous page where I posted info on the voltage regulator, it should be in the 13.8 to 14.5 volt range. If it is not then either the S/G is not generating or the voltage regulator is not working.

Jeff B., even without any lights on, after running for several minutes the meter starts to indicate full charging, if it is running full throttle. If it is idleing or part throttle it indicates a lesser charge. It's been this way for quite some time but I have not had the time to look into it. I have a full size battery mounted out back and so far no issues. Not sure if it's running normal or not? I may be over charging the battery but it's a couple of years old and it's working well. Next time I start it up I guess I really should put my meter on it. I've never had a problem with running low on battery power when running all the lights. All 4 headlights are standard 4411 bulbs. Are those headlights you have on your Cub high wattage bulbs, i.e., halogen?

You know (gonna pi$$ ppl off here but...) I sit here and read how great my (insert your name) cub is. It'll mow down redwoods, plow 42" deep in hard packed clay , out run , out jump , out drink any other brand on the planet... until you have to get out and start using them! Seems everybody is having to repair, buy new parts, trouble shoot, make do ...

I like my non wore out 2166 even better! I just wish it'd cut grass without leaving half of it standing back up, it had 12" rear wheels , a drink holder big enough to actually hold a drink (Diet Pepsi)(now used as ear plug holder), didn't coast when I took my foot off the "go pedal", had a toggle "forward / reverse pedal", had a charge meter ... I come by GRUMP! honestly!!

Wish I hadn't took my old reel mower to the junk yard... but the ol lady was gettin tired pushing me around the yard while I rode a sulky behind it ...

Everyone says RTFM, well I read it today and nowhere in it did it give a "suggested ramming speed" when plowing snowbanks over 2 feet!! Plowed for a second time today. I will be going to my dads tonight to get my QA42A. She's all new and never been used. Thought I would give her a try.

Mike F: SG belt a little loose? Snow on it'll make it slip..never hurts to check the obvious..
Kraig: never mind on the e-mail if somebody's gonna post them..
Ken - I dunno - let's see how well that 2166 is runnin' 35 years from now (even with perfect maintenance). My 129 hasn't let me down since I bought it in '85 (and that's with "when I remember" maintenance). Keep in mind also that operation in extremely cold weather is about the hardest you can get on equipment...

halogen 55 watt ea. and ur videos are uploaded and being processed. Ill post the link on here then

Ken - I think I have an old reel mower around here somewhere, you can have it if you want.

I don't ever remember seeing a "RTFM" except in jest or explaining what it meant (Read the Factory Manual) since the move!
A suggestion or 3 to have them on hand has been and always will be suggested though.
Or did I miss something?

On the chute turner that David Kirk built (see his postings on December 10th), he used a "wavy washer" as a slip clutch. David- if you're out there - or anyone - know a source of these in singles? I can get 'em from McMaster-Carr, but I don't need a whole pack. I'm wondering if they're used someplace on a Cub..

Ken: THis is when msot breakdowns happen... Its always nice to have someone will to help on here....

figured i'd give u all a picture of our snow before i blow it for the fourth time

I bought my "#2 125" in 1993, it's the one in the snow removal photos below. I believe it was provided with decent maintence during it's prior life as a corporate tractor. It was owned by a large corporation in St. Paul, MN and was used to sweep sidewalks. Since I bought it I've had the PTO rebuilt once and that was right after I bought it. I had to replace the S/G because one of the bearings seized up, still have not been able to get the pulley off of it so I can replace the bearings. It is on it's 3rd battery since I've had it. I don't recall any other repairs to the tractor. This is my main tractor, it is used in both the winter and summer. It mows my large lawn and many paths around my 5 acre property. I also use it to mow the lawn at my church. I use it weekly in the heating season to haul fire wood. The snowthrower I use it made up of two different snowthrowers. The subframe and gearbox/driveshaft is from the one that was bought new by my parents in 1969 with their 125 (now my "#1 125"). The auger, main housing and discharge chute are from one I bought used from Don V. back in about 2000. The mower deck that I use is a 42" QA deck that came with the 125 my parents bought new. I believe the spindle bearings are original. My dad insisted that I ALWAYS grease them before each use, something I still do. Same with the QA42 snowthrower. I did have to replace one of the mule drive pulleys when the bearing in it "smoked". I believe proper maintenance is the key to dependable operation. I use my Cubs hard and they often set outside but I do grease and oil and otherwise take care of them. I assume (dangerous territory) that many of the Cubs out there are second hand or third hand and have been treated poorly in their long lives. Their new owners likely fix the obvious stuff but overlook the hidden stuff like electrical wiring and internal parts.

Now I have writer's cramp. Bad KENtucky

Kraig - Yeah, I noticed that post and thought it might be something that I need to read through. I'll read through it this evening. Thanks for the tip.

Peter R., I have 5 different version of the 42" blade manual, they all say something like this:

Not too bad of an arch for a bone stock QA42A with 'EZ-Slide'

You can even see a little bit of 'pulse' in the snow stream.

Brandon was on clean up duty again. The 1250 had no problems at all
