What should I set the air gap too? A friend of mine suggested .017. When I tighten the nuts down to this spec, the belt pully turns hard. If I back them off to about .020, the pulley turns freely. Now when I took this apart to replace the seal, the nuts were turned out to the end of the 3 bolts-(they were flush)-and yet the PTO worked fine. Shouldn't the pulley in the front turn freely when the PTO is turned off? Because of the oil leak, I was forced to take the PTO assembly apart to clean. Otherwise I could have left it intact.

The cover is the brake. When you turn on the clutch it pulls away from the cover and will spin it should be tight when not turned on.

Tammy, I do mine on feel. Just shot for somewhere between the numbers you said.

We are talking about .001 or .003 of an inch on something that probably expands more than that when it gets hot. You should just hear it rubbing when turned off. And you shouldn't be able to turn it when it's turned on.

Then I will adjust to 0.017 and run it to see what happens. I was concerned with having excessive wear if not set right. Thanks.

The "brake" feature was required to comply with safety standards, ie, blades stop within 3 seconds etc. If gap is too large the brake won't work right and the mower deck will coast to a stop when the clutch is turned off. It's a good feature and won't cause any undo wear. I hope that you will have good luck with your CC. It was a great question !!

I usually set to .012".......Jim is right, the brake is good and won't cause any issues.
