Richard, thanks for the link! I spent a bunch of my youth on a couple of model H Farmalls that my cousins had. Actually they might still have them. I need to stop by and check some day.

What made a Super a Super... I.E. Super H or Super M. I understand the designations, D, TA, but never understood Super......

Watched some other related video, I need to get to Paquette's in Florida.........
 
Scott, we had a M on the farm when I was young and the IH dealer put in a super kit which I think had different Pistons. I don't know if they did anything to the head or valves. I remember going into the shop when they had it tore down. It has never been opened up since and still running today. What a work horse.
 
If I recall right not all H or M FAMRALLS could be bored out to become a Super tractor. This was determined if there was enough material on the block to enable the engine to allow boring. Also the carburetor was changed over to the Super Series carburetor. Both of my parents H and M were bored and made into Super engines. When the Torque Amplifier was added the Super MTA actually had a beefier rear end due to the increase in puling power. This was discovered when FARMALL added a torque amplifier to a regular FARMALL H.

There were a bunch of seemingly small but significant changes to make a super. In addition not all the changes came out at once so some guys talk about stage 1 , 2 and 3 supers I believe. I'm far from an expert on m's or h's so forgive any errors. In late 53 the h and m got disc style brakes as well as slightly bigger sleeves and pistons as well as the live hyd pump mounted to the engine instead of the belly pump that quit pumping when the clutch was pushed in. Also I believe the gear ratios were changes a bit to make them more useful in the field. Ex 2nd or 3rd was changed to be a bit faster I believe? The super m ta was newer than a straight super coming out sometime in 54?

The m and h trans and rear end are similar but different animals I believe? There was no super h ta. Ih elected to hold off on that until the 300 was introduced.

Dfrisk and others could give us a better detailed description of the super differences but those are a few off the top of my head.
 
Doug - You are exactly correct. There are a few " invisible" changes, like the top transmission shaft pilot bearing between the input transmission shaft and the transmission sliding gear shaft was increased in size and load capacity, newer sealed beam headlights, most Super's got battery box seat bases, the taller triple baffle gas caps, drawbar were increased in thickness to pull heavier loads.
It would have been nice if IH had cast the Fast Hitch mounting bolt hole bosses on SH's like they did on SM-TA's.
I had a '39 H that Dad traded for the '54 Stage #2 SH I have now in May 1968. I'm ALWAYS looking for excuses to spend more seat time on it. And someday I WILL have a Super M-TA. Dad bought a nice one about 1961, maybe '62, anyhow, first tractor I did any fieldwork on spring of '63, at 8-9 yrs old, it was traded for a 450 spring of '65 and seemed like I LIVED on that tractor in spring. Dad had the SM-TA repainted spring of '64, I still remember running it the 5 miles home from town. It looked brand new!
Anyway, Guy FAY'S Letter Series Restoration Guide describes most if not ALL the changes/improvements in the different Super 's.
