Pop's 1864 Cub's PTO blows fuses with belt on, doesn't with belt off...

Btw, the dealer looked for issues where the wires emerge from the coil, also. That all looked good. Like you said, he said that would have been the best failure to have (for fixing it inexpensively, that is).

Pop's 1864 Cub's PTO blows fuses with belt on, doesn't with belt off...

Jim, Well, the old one's bearings were dry, sure enough, but not seized or broken up. The local dealer (good guys, owner and mechanic) were encouraging of both packing old bearings or sourcing new ones through local bearing house (Motion Industries)... but, the swollen and cracked winding...

Pop's 1864 Cub's PTO blows fuses with belt on, doesn't with belt off...

Hi Jim, That would explain the side-force causing a short, where the belt taken off clears up the short. That's the best place for the short to be, versus down in the windings, eh? I'll take it apart and see (and take pictures). Thanks, Russell.

Pop's 1864 Cub's PTO blows fuses with belt on, doesn't with belt off...

My Dad’s 1864 Cub Cadet (model 14A-684-100 sn: 894007) blew its first main fuse last week. Went through the wiring and fuses and the short story is that I can put a temp in line fuse right at the PTO’s harness input, along with an inline ammeter (car style +/-30amp) and attempt to engage the...

    3225 kohler command engine...

My 400 or so hour cub cadet 3225 is starting to increase its oil intake and smoke a little... came to me through a few other owners, so not sure on the history. Hard for me to spend a lot of time on anything these days, so I was looking around for what it'd cost for just a new-in-the-box...

Last year or model #'s cub cadet used gear drive

And the 1604 (aka yellow and white version of the 582 special), like the 482 and 1100, with the peerless.

    582 Special

I have a 1604, which is the later version of the 582 Special. Mine went south last year at around 1300hrs, dropping a valve or throwing a rod, something that resulted in covering the neighborhood with oil smoke and blowing oil up thru the carb. I really liked that engine up till then, though...

Cub 3225 Sticky Governor (kohler v-twin, mech. gov.)

I have a governor question… I was searching the non-IH cub section for governor info on the Kohler v-twins, but didn’t find a entry like my specific question. My later model 3225 Cub Cadet, with a 22hp Kohler Command engine (with the mechanical governor system) has a bit of a sticky...

Jerry B., sounds good on the sprayer. Appreciate the tips. I may get by the salvage yard this week, to scout for atv racks.

Jerry B., Cool, I'll try the ATV rig running off the cub starter/gen... I still need to build the rack for the rear... thought I'd go by a motorcycle salvage yard over in Huntsville, that carries a lot of ATV stuff, and get a rear-rack (guess a front one would be fine too) off of a 4-wheeler...

Charlie, that mule-drive/battery-box is pretty sweet... I didn't think about being able to still use the pulleys after the mod, but that makes a lot of sense... I'll start planning on my equivalent mod... I think I may use one of the new 38" deck mule-drives... I had a perverse thought of making...

Art, that's not a bad idea. I know I'd like the extra umph of a bigger battery for cranking (we did that on a rear mount box on Dad's 127, many moons ago, and it was really a whirler on the starting). I'll look over the stuff over this weekend, between working in the last of the hay baling...

Kraig, that's a pretty clever idea. I've got four wide frame mule-drives (two came with 38" deck kits from ebay, and are new or new-ish, one came with the 44" deck on the 129, and one came with the 50c deck from a off-topic successor to the 582special - which wasn't so special , especially...

yep, i almost picked up the gas treatment version of the MMO just the other day at the parts store (versus the straight MMO oil)... they should have made the labels more different looking... i mentioned this stuff to a coworker that's a pilot on the side, and he started laughing, saying that all...

Ken, I'm more of a reader than a poster of the forum here (but, I doubt if I've skipped 10% of the days postings in several years -- man, this is a great site/forum).... so, I'm probably the wrong person to have brought this up, or to be terribly knowledgeable about this... that said, my...
