Just picked it up. Guy went to start it and wouldnt turn over, the fuse in the power wire to the selenoid from the key was blown. He put another fuse in and it started. I get it home and tried it out for 1/2 hr then shut it down to inspect then tried starting it and fuse blew...Any ideas ? ( besides now we know why he sold it )
 
Bad insulation/defective wiring causing a direct short to ground, or starter/solenoid is overloading the circuit due to being defective. The Cyclops era wiring was especially troublesome, so obtain a wiring diagram, and start tracing to rule out the wiring, especially if there is evidence that the wiring has been tampered with. Once you are satisfied that the wiring is good, then scrutinize various components such as the ign. switch, starter/solenoid until it is repaired. Compared to a car, the electrical systems on these are basic, but can be a pain.
 
So, do these use a slow blow 20A fuse? I know the earlier tractors used a slow blow glass fuse, but I believe these used the plastic blade type. The slow blow plastic fuses are available, just not sure if they were specified by Cub Cadet for these.
 
Check owner's manual and schematics to determine the correct size fuse.
Maybe the PO was using one that was/is way too small.
Time to break out the meters and do some investigative actions.
Check for high resistance that circuit.
All terminals need to be clean bright and tight.

The fuse is like a mid 90 chevy. plastic flat blade with 2 prongs.

he had a 25 fuse in it. I dont know if i said this recenrly but i suck at lectricity.

Make sure you are using the correct amperage fuse.
A larger amp fuse is not the way to go. If you do this, something else will "blow" instead of the fuse. :yikes:

Took fuse out after i got it running and the pto wouldnt engauge. Guess the pto gets power from the switch. Gonna swap switches and see what that does .
 
Changed out the key switch with a known good one . started up runs fine. If I only let it fun a few minuites then shut it off..no problem but if you use it for more than 10 minutes and shut it off that's when the fuse blows
 
cubs, you said it blows when you shut it off,did you mean when you trying starting it again while engine is hot?I'm no expert on elec. but it sounds heat related.like something is still on that shouldn't be but bad grounds being interuppted can cause a wire to heat so can arcing on positive side....might take a hand full of fuses to track but removing 1 wire at a time from main switch might prove a point.I'm even wondering if sol is staying in on mode or maybe starter is getting too hot..other issues causing heat could be plugged fins,low oil, most of this has been said in previous posts by guys who surely know more than I
