Also check out ford escorts early models may have been 13" but later had 14". they are running 4 bolts at 4" spacing. Used wheels from an escort to make trailer for my cub. Once I enlarged the center hole the rim fit a standard trailer hub (4 bolt 4" spacing).

So Brown Thursday turned into OFF TOPIC Friday as well?

Wayne Shytle....I just gotta ask something also. Why would you have to take tire and wheel off to remove/install sleeve hitch with a through-rod?? I have a through-rod on three of my cub cadet sleeve hitches and never have had to take tire/wheel off to remove or install sleeve hitch.

Just remove both pins--slide rod over an inch or so one direction--angle sleeve hitch toward you to clear mounting hole --slide rod other direction couple inches--and hitch is off. Simple as that.

Ok, I admit first time I tried, I thought I had to pull rod completely through lower mount to remove hitch also and thought this really sucks! Then it hit me to try it as I mentioned above.

This through-rod method of mounting works really well. Makes for a more solid mounting over the two individual pins. Have not bent one yet. And I have hooked some huge tree roots plowing gardens to put it to a test! Cheap and easy. Cut 1/2" rod to length, drill two holes for pins, and install.

Charlie...Doing my part to get back on topic!

Kirk-

I have tried that more than once. Maybe you have a little wallowing in the holes but if you have 1/2" holes and 1/2" rod I don't know how it will work. Maybe I'm missing something. It's happened before. I do know I have tried to do what you speak of and it wouldn't happen for me. In order to get the through rod installed it reqired removing one of the rear wheels...period.

Thanks for that, I will give the points a file in the am.I need to finish the 125 I have so much to do. I got a call tonight about a 122 with a creeper and I guess I will be dragging it home Dec 1st. It is all in pieces and needs to be put back together. But it will have a blade in the deal just no engine 150.00 . The same guy will put his other 3 Cubs in the paper for sale after exmas and IF they don`t sell I get them all. He said I can`t stand the ides that they would go for scrap and I know you would not scrap them.I need to find some help with the cubs because I want them all running and refurbed.I must be crazy to get more Cubs .

Don: could it be that the "younger generation" hasn't got around yet to appreciating quality?
Kirk: Your lower pic prompts a question I've been thinking about. Why isn't the lower attachment point on the Brinly hitch the same width as the sleeve hitch pin? That angle of the attaching bars drives me crazy.

I'm calling this SOS (priced cedar shingles, lately?):

The K341 is in the cellar and I don't know what to think. What I know is that the dimple on the piston was facing forward and the oil hole on the crank bearing was on the camshaft side. The only indication that I have that this engine was ever apart is what looks like a black gasket sealer (very rubbery) that I've never seen before. This engine has balance gears and the lower one has quite a bit of play in it. The oil pan is aluminum and a very faded yellowish color. As usually happens when the innards go south there's a chunk gone from the bottom of the cylinder wall, but I don't think it's enough to worry about. A lot of the connecting rod "bearing" ended up on the crankshaft journal. I sincerely believe that this engine calved due to either metal fatigue or poor maintenence. OR, if a new connecting rod was installed, it wasn't properly torqued.

JEFF B.
Good eye! That's my "spare" S/G.

1st - Hope everyone had a GREAT BIG TURKEY DAY!!!!

Frank - glad to see you went ahead and tore that K341 apart. As you noted, looking at the outside of the block it doesn't look like anything was done recently. I don't think you get that kind of dirt build up on the outside of the end plate after just a couple years. You didn't give us a very good view of the piston either. The other thing is how the cylinder wall looks and measures out. Let us know and give us a few more pics. Also, on the balance gears, ya got me worried. I suspect you're gonna have to turn the crank but you won't know until it's cleaned off, and if you do I think I'd recommend the David Kirk balance plate instead of the gears. Keep filling us in.

Now, since Jeff B piped in about the S/G being on the floor (and I had to magnify the pic to see it), I got a gripe about the K341 being on the floor. It should be settin' on a pedestal!!!

Well I did find the starter gen beside the yellow bucket ,looking at Franks engine do I see the head gasket was leaking ? Also the top of the bore looks dirty , I wonder how long it has been since that engine ran ? Frank You need to show a picture down the bore and the skirt damage , please !

On another note I did not know that my wife reads the posts on this site and well did I ever get told last night. You don`t need any more tractors !

Now it's going to be a "pick at it" process. I knew it was going to haunt me until I got it opened up and took advantage of the last few days of warm weather we're likely to get for awhile. Harry, I think its pedestal is going to be something I can set it up on - it's getting it up there that's the problem. My days of picking them up are gone! The shrouding is going through the e-tank after cleaning the grime off in the deep sink. Today a 123 will pull the 169 back into the quonset out back. We're on the same wave length - one of my first thoughts this morning was Dave Kirk's balancing system.
Don, the bore has a little surface rust from sitting in a damp quonset without its head on. When it's cleaned up I'll post a pic. I did notice it's scratched. The upper piston rings were ok, but the lower oil ring is pretty well gunked up. That engine hasn't been apart recently! I'll be talking to the guy I got it from to see what his story is - not that I have any complaints.
Have a great day, everyone!!

HAPPY FRIDAY EVEVRYONE!!!

Steve B. I like what you said about the different bolts. Great Job!!!

Melody S. Nope. I haven't given up yet. I just basically cut the old harness out and pulled. I purchased a good used harness and voltage regulator. I need to go to town this morning and get some taps and some new bolts. (My bolt/nut stock in the sizes needed has run low.) The PO had the starter generator held on by pretty much belt tension and the top bolt. The bottom back bolt is MIA and the bottom front bolt was and undersize one that just flattened the starter/generator mount threads. I HOPE to be able to save that piece. I'm also buying an easy out in case I have to go to Plan B which is find another mount with a broken back bolt. More than likely I won't be able to keep this neat little 147 since I have another project in the making. Hopefully, this afternoon, I can have it fired up and then get some pictures of the little fella running.

It is currently a very windy 24* outside and quite a change from yesterday's mid 60* windy weather.

Everyone have a wonderful and safe day.

So I get this email from South Africa about a Cub being used as a flower pot at an antique store, asking if it's worth buying, LOL

I told him why sure, then I get this pic.

Its the rare 70 glider-flower planter.Good thing it is right hand drive.

Frank - it will make a big difference picking it up if you can get that flywheel off 1st. Don't keep us is alot of suspense tho. You could still get us some pics of the piston, and the cylinder wall.

Charlie - looks like someone is starting to clean it up nice. Now, I don't see an engine in any of the pics, so I sure hope there is one.

About the Cub Cadet being used as a flower holder.... In the top picture look very carefully at the upper right side of the picture ... alongside the house is a totally different Cub Cadet... It is right beneath the numbers 85 on the side of the house. Then there is the Cub Cadet with the canvas tarp on it. <font size="-2">(By golly... Getting bifocals aftera all these years really does help spot those Cub Cadets.

I do believe the first set of photos are all of the same cub, the second set is also the same cub but in dismantle mode, and in the top pic from second set it appears to be a cub steering wheel and tower in the background.
