My 128 with rebuilt K 301 engine that uses very little oil gives a large puff of blue smoke when throttle is opened after a period of idling. Why?

Dennis: Go to a snowmobile dealer and get some clothes designed for sledding. Boots can be rated to -100, mitts and suits good for sub 0 F temperatures. This stuff won't be cheap but you do want to stay warm, right? If you layer with cotton, keep it for summer. Get polar fleece or wool. Advice...

Terry Davis. I had an elbow seized into my K301. I kept soaking it with penetrant, tapping frequently with a small hammer and applying torque both in a tightening and loosening direction and the elbow to my surprise came loose after a week or so. Don't give up but I suspect that the cutting...

Wayne: have you tried those brakes yet? Will they grip enough to slide the wheels? I replaced mine and used some friction material made for a large tractor clutch and the friction coefficient is not enough to give me the brakes I want. What material did you use and where is it available? If the...

128 brakes: Were the original brakes capable of full wheel lock up? I have replaced brake lining but can not slide wheels or even keep tractor stopped on much of a slope and am wondering if the COF (co-efficient of friction) is adequate to do the job or if there is something else not correct. I...

Need some help on my QA42A snow blower. The u-joint at the transfer shaft keeps coming loose no matter how tight I make the set screws. Have even added a second set screw and lock tighted both in place. New shaft and both bearings and all seems tight. Looks like the u-joint runs at a pretty...

Is there a way to identify a series I from a series II 17 HP Kohler other than a sticker that may or may not be affixed to the engine?

I added an in line fuel filter to my 128 and found that it ran out of gas with some still in tank. Learned that that filter was designed for an engine that uses a fuel pump verses the gravity set up on my tractor. Changing to a gravity type filter and everything is good.

The QA42A had a ruined auger drive end shaft due to a seized bearing. Normally, augers are equipped with stub shafts that are removable but this one had welded in place stub shafts which may have been done during a previous repair. I considered welding up the bad shaft and re-machining but my...
