Replacement engine for MTD

I have an MTD lawn tractor in need of a new engine. It seems that I cannot get the same model# for replacement. Can anyone tell me what other engines might be a direct replacement for mine? My current engine is a Briggs & Stratton Md. 42A707, Type 1550 01, Code 9510315B. 18 HP Powerbuilt, twin cylinder, cast iron sleeve, verticle shaft. I would appreciate any help. I cannot seem to find anyone who knows and I think there must be some other engine that will fit.

I'm not much help with the big briggs or even MTD stuff but I know for every engine taken out of service there are several available for that same application. It's primarily a matter of a bolt pattern and matching crank demensions (size and length). Cables, linkage and headroom (will it fit) are also of main concern. A good Briggs dealer should be able to do a cross reference if your present engine can't be duplicated.

Someone here will be better informed and able to assist you with numbers and such I'm sure.

You can go to the B&S website and with those engine numbers you can send an email to their service guys, they will respond with the current replacement
