I need help guys. My electric PTO clutch smoked itself. (The field coil burned up) I replaced the entire clutch assy. and again within about 2 minutes, the field coil went up in flames again. The PTO was engaged and working. Melted down , burnt up, released magic smoke. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening?

Is this clutch adjusted up per instructions as indicated in the Service Manual..??

Yes, I set it up with .017" air gap as recommended. My understanding of how this works is that this measurement would only affect the moving parts anyhow. The field coil doesn't physically come in contact with any other part. The adjustment should have no effect on the electrical parts.
