"No, the clutch is engaged when the center button is not depressed. That way, no wear is occurring when the clutch is in use. The clutch is disengaged by depressing the center button." so if you remove the PTO linkage, your mower deck would be always on, no way to shut it off? I thought it...- fsnerd

i believe the backfiring was part of the exhaust leak which was causing the stalling when hot. so, i am going to apply furnace cement today to fix the exhaust leak, which should solve the backfiring. but, im not done on here yet, stand by for stupid snow thrower questions, i think i am...- fsnerd
