Kendall, Matt is correct, I never intended to go around the sponsors. My steering column was shot, yet now once again like new. Most of our sponsors deal in used parts. I think they may have found some new life for the stack of worn out columns behind the shed. Hope so as I still need them...

Tristan, You might want to try and find one of these. It is a truck brake return spring.

Kraig, I should have also mentioned in my thread that I did the exact same thing with a thin thrust bearing from Mc-C. I did use a thin nyloc nut though as my original nuts are long gone. Also, I should have mentioned that the needle bearings for the steering are each rated at 2900 lbs, more...

Hi All, It has been a while since I have posted anything although I do come and lurk every now and then to learn something. Greetings from Santa Barbara – still no snow to push off my driveway, keep hoping. The steering on my Original had just about seen its last turn as the ball...

    582 "hunting" throttle/gov problem

Toby, Because it is new and recently assembled could mean something did not go together correctly. The symptoms certainly sound like an air leak when hot. Definetly look for a crack where the carb connects. Is there a plastic heat shield where the carb bolts on, could be cracked. Good...

    582 "hunting" throttle/gov problem

Sounds like it could be an air leak behind the carb. After it heats up the leak opens making it run lean that is why the choke then helps. Might have a torn gasket, no gasket or a crack.

Bobby B. I fixed my worn keyway by basically "knurling" the key. Keys are cheap so this is something to try. Use a pointed drift and put several dents in the keyway, both sides where it fits into the crank. This makes the key slightly wider. Also, use a long key as Dennis recommended. Use a...

Wyatt, You are correct, all those things need to come out. I have all the parts out and in the cleaning tank. I needed to be sure there was nothing else loose to create some damage. I have obviously been running for quite some time without the governor operational and as you suggested, it...

Bryan, Found it, thanks. I had been to the koehlerengines.com site previously but in the manuals section they did not have one for the K181. The FAQ link goes to a common/resources sub directory. Now to try and decipher the dark pictures taken into a cave.

Bryan, I have the Blue Ribbon Service manual, GSS-1292. I have not looked at the downloadable manual. Do you have a web address? An interesting part of this whole experience is that the engine was running fine. I found all the bits and pieces when I decided to fix an oil drool from the...

Greetings from Santa Barbara, Been lurking for a while but have a question. On my original 7hp the governor gear broke, not sure how. Lucky I had a magnetic drain plug as it caught all of the parts including the stub shaft. No other damage. I have searched the archives. Is there an...

Pete I do not know if a 149 has the large pulley on the front of the motor. My Original developed a loud knock that definitely resembled a conrod or piston. It turned out that the pulley was rocking on the crank making this noise. It had a cracked hub. If there is a pully on the 149 try...

    Couplings Drive Shafts and Cubs

Anybody have some words of wisdom on replacing the large front pulley (sheaves as Granger calls them) on an Original? I have cracked three off the shelf types at the hub, one aluminum two cast iron. They start rocking which makes a horrible knock and then immediately crack. Cranking down on the...

Kraig, Wanted to thank you for your info on the lift springs. I ended up finding one but not easily, truck repair places are a little scarce here. I was about to cut up the spring and then tried this. It works perfectly for just a front end implement which is what I have. Of course having a...
