Until a few years ago, I was in the same, manual labor club.My splitter consists of an axe, 6 or 8 lb maul and probably multiple choice words. I do like using a tire, set the chunk inside the tire, split and move on. Works really well...

Your locust wood must be a mite different than my black locust wood. My locust is the reason I bought a hydraulic power splitter. I still use the manual one for the straight grained ash.I actually don't mind it, up here in PA, locust wood is plentiful and it splits very well. Elm, hickory or maple on the other hand... I curse like a sailor.
