Voltage regulator 3wire vs. 4wire

Model 129, my 3wire voltage regulator test bad. I have a 4 wire regulator on hand.
Without having an internal wire diagram of both regulators, I don't know if you can make the 4 wire work in place of the 3 wire.
Comparing tractor diagrams that use the 3 wire vs. the 4 wire, it somewhat appears the B terminal on the 3 wire does about what
the L terminal on the 4 wire does. Gets voltage to the coil.
Can you just skip hooking anything to the L terminal and use the 4 wire in place of the 3 wire ?

L is for lights or load only.
