40 or so years ago, chains and binders were the preferred tools to anchor equipment and material to trailers & low-boys for transport. At some point, nylon slings with ratchets have become prominent. Both should be inspected prior to use but nylon slings would obviously wear more, particularly if not properly padded on corners or sharp edges. Is one better than the other? Or have chains been pushed aside due to their 'value' when stolen & sold for scrap?

IMHO for Cub Cadet transport straps are better/best. No scratching and have some limited "stretch" not the rigid stopping force. Now moving heavy construction equipment chains are the best.
