I’ve had my driveshaft out, new flex coupling and new rear coupling to the pump from Jeff. There was a leak from the pump input shaft so I replaced it with a National 471466 which was a cross from a C/R 2863. Leaks like sieve! Is there some quirk to the seal type or ?? that I’m not aware of? Can I simply remove that front housing without complication? I bought 2 of the seals so I have another. Should I go with another brand seal. Suggestions are welcome please.

Is there radial play in the shaft? If so, input shaft bearings need to be replaced. I have found this to cause this seal to leak on 2 of my tractors.

That aside, I can see paint on the input shaft. That and any rust or burrs should have been cleaned off before installing the new seal. Another possibility, I have recently had an experience with another application where the original CR brand seal was crossed to national and it leaked. New CR seal and it's fine.

There’s no play in the shaft at all. In my haste I overlooked the paint and perhaps didn’t seat the seal in quite as far even though it felt like it. I’ll find me a CR and clean she shaft. Thanks!

I would wrap some painters tape on that shaft to protect the seal.

Clean the end of that input shaft up with a fine file where the hole is.
Look like some burrs there and the paint on the shaft proper where the seal rides is not helping matters either.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have it cleaned up now as best as it can be I think. It’s sure showing it’s age!

Lubricate the shaft and seal will also help not to damage the seal.

The seal lip need a lite dab of lithium
Lube but don’t fill the hole lip ridge when installing don’t roll the edge of lip !!!! Looks like you an old hat at this though !!!! Ol Cat Man !!!! Don’t leave a pressure on the shaft going into the hydra-stat can cause damage inside especially on the 3235 series lift pump !!!!

The shaft was lubed from the previous leaking seal. Main problem was my haste in getting it installed and not inspecting and cleaning the shaft properly. I was pinched for time and should have left it for the next day. I do think I’ll pick up a NAPA/CR6904 seal though.
Note: And to not mislead anyone in the future, that 2863 seal number I initially posted was on the National box and is NOT the CR number. 6204 superseded by 6904 is the direct interchange for IHC/CC 394847R91, 921-3032, National 471466, Sunstrand 9008000-6204. The specs on those are .625x1.124x.250

Follow-up, went on and installed the spare National seal and no leak so far. Has another small leak that I’m afraid is the gasket between the pump and rear end housing. It will have to drip until the tilling is done.

Sounds like the infamous Hydro CORK GASKET leak. Last post I saw here about that gasket Cub Cadet changed it to a composite material, a nitrile rubber with ground up cork bits in it with pressure sensitive adhesive on one side. The new gasket is WAY superior to the original.

Do you know if the part number was updated or just changed materials? Maybe when 721-3004 was superseded by 921-3004?

Well I used the other National seal I had, started tilling Saturday and it started pouring oil. Should have a C/R-SKF seal after lunch. If this doesn’t work I’ll have to weigh my options.

Yeah that input seal I picked up the CR seal after lunch, installed it and no leak I’m looking for a SpeediSleeve in case this starts leaking. This input shaft is not in great shape. Still have the occasional drip from what I believe to be the cork gasket. Just trying to get a small garden in at this point.

Usually, if there's any question about the sealing surface of a shaft, I will use a strip of #600 grit wet/dry "Triamite"(sp?) paper and highly polish the surface in question with a half-wrap buffing motion like when you polish shoes. Yeah, it takes some time to do, but if done correctly, I've never had a problem.
Be sure to wipe away any grit left behind and lightly oil the seal lips before the install. I usually use a little Locktite #640 to seal & retain the seal in a casting. Rarely ever had a problem.

That’s what I did, still a little groove. Hopefully it will love the CR better.
