Anyone have an idea why the steering Wheel shaft and nut are higher than the depression on the center part of the steering wheel? There is a decal for the steering wheel that won’t work this way.
Thanks for any help.

Skip - kind of a strange issue and I can't see how much higher the shaft is than the depressed area of the wheel in your pic. Did you remove the wheel recently? Since I don't have a wheel handy to look at I can only think from memory. As I recall there is a metal spline coupling impressed into the wheel, that mates to the spline at the top of the steering shaft. I suppose it's possible the spline coupling on the wheel has somehow broken loose or moved higher into the wheel resulting in your situation. I guess you'll need to remove your wheel and have a look-see.

Also, I suppose someone may have really torqued or over-torqued on the nut and really pulled the wheel down. This is absolutely unnecessary. In fact, the nut should just barely be tightened against the wheel.

Guess you could just remove the wheel and re-install, and lightly tighten the nut to see if it works. If not then you'll probably have to find another steering wheel. And for what it's worth, I believe you have a Quiet Line unit in the pic. On the later versions of the Quiet Line IH changed the steering wheel to one that was slightly thicker and more comfortable, and used a small triangular plastic center cap instead of that decal. I used this wheel on my 169 and am attaching a pic. The original center caps have a nice silver IH on them. Later replacements from CCC were just blank.

Skip - Does it have the thin, jam nut on there? My 1450 was lie that and I discovered someone had used a regular thick nut, and cranked it down. The nut should only be about 5/16" or 3/8" thick.

Thanks Hydro, and yes I did pull the steering wheel during the refurbishment project. When I purchased the 1650, the steering wheel insert/decal was missing. Seems like there should be metal or plastic insert in the depressed area that the decal would be affixed to?
Guess I’ll have to pull the wheel again to see what adjustments could be made.
Thanks

Glippert - it does have the thin nut - like a shy 3/8”. Guess I’ll have to pull the steering wheel again to see about some adjustments.
Thanks for the reply.

Skip - The original decal for that steering wheel was a thin metal "plate," almost like a real heavy foil. It was glued on, and usually got bent up when removing it, but much heavier than the replacement "film" decals.
