Just bought a Spirit of 76 lawn tractor. Overall decent shape but the engine is shot. Does anyone know what a good replacement motor would be so that I don't have to cut holes in the hood? The engine looks like a 7hp B&S

Well, the 8 hp and 7 hp Briggs flat head engines from that era were the same external size. I am thinking the 7 hp. engines model starts with 17xxxx and the 8 hp. starts with 19xxxx. Snapper mowers-the rear engine riders-used lots of 7 and 8 Hp. Briggs engines back in that day and were common down here in NC. But you really need to know what your crank dimensions are -diameter and length before you go looking for a replacement, so your pulleys will fit on the new engine. Keep in mind that about any engine you find will have 40 years of use on it and may at least need rings if not more to make a dependable engine.
