What is a reason why you wouldn't?
Mainly because I'm not smarter than the people that designed it and there's no reason to change something that's worked for 20+ years. Plus the fact that bentonite doesn't break down as fast when it heats up.

Yes, and it's used for well drilling too. It's get slippery when wet.
Oh, I know. When working on my manager pond, I added many bags to a slightly porous dam. I went down hard a fee times. I thought it a bit gritty for a gearbox application.
