Went to start my 1440 and a puff of smoke came up behind the dash could it be the voltage indicator solenoid or relay? Will not start.

Could be.. or it could be a wire that chafed and shorted to some metal part.

Like mfrade mentioned, I would look at the wiring real close, carefully so you don't disturb to much. Could be as simple as a wire terminal broke off or slide off the connection. Good luck.

Had this happen one time and it was thee fuse holder got melted, I think it was because the spring got weak and was not making good contact therefore causing a lot of heat. I would check that

Hello, I also had a fuse holder melt this summer. Pick up a replacement at Advance and good to go. The contacts can get dirty and cause overheat. This fuse was near the battery between dash and engine on 1863.

I also replaced the fuse holder in my 2084. Appears to be a fairly common issue. I put a nice sealed one on and did the connections up with heat shrink and all that

check the key switch and plug in harness that plugs in key switch. grass and dirt can make it short out
