I was just putting my cub cadet 147 back together and noticed there are slots on the bottom of the axle where the spindles go in . Does anyone know what these slots are for. I assumed they were there to aid in the cast process.
just curious. Thank you to all who respond.

That's what they are there for.
Make sure they are clean and not worn down to the point where they won't allow the grease to escape.

Also, make sure the sleeves in the axle ends are clean, shiny and rotate smoothly within the bores of the axle ends and will accept grease thru the fittings.
They are supposed to be captured by the knuckle ass'y and turn INSIDE the axle bore as an assembly with the knuckle when torqued with the bolt and keyed with a cotter pin.

Good to know for a wide frame but a 147 this does not apply, well, except making sure it is free of debris.
