Trying to cypher the start sequence. New machine to me, well about a month ago. Been sitting till I got around to it.

Had the battery jumped to my truck.
Tractor key in on position, kill switch pulled out, depress starter button - no action at all.

Anyone have a schematic for an O-cub.

This machine is sorta a basket case. Would like to at least get it to run.

But I may get rid of it either way do to space constraints, and lack of useful implements.

Has a mower deck, but its not original, and there is no PTO disengage feature, have to remove a belt to get it to not run with the motor.

Got the motor to crank, has spark, was not getting fuel. Put a spare carb in it, and replaced the fuel line.

Will sputter some with starter fluid, but thats it. Very easy to spin the crank by hand.

Checked compression, have 0.

Motor is shot. Maybe its a head gasket, not sure. Would need to tear down.

I’ll have to think if I want to go any further.

Might just offload.

Beats me!

Probably got it flooded now and washed the cylinder wall down so no compression.
Did it spin this easily to begin with?
Hate to see you give up this easily.

Bought an 0riginal in 1978 $ 250 good shape no compression valve was stuck .Local shop(power engine sales IN) cut valve seat (brought the block to them ) cut seat and reamed guide $10 bought new valve cleaned carb new points ,spark plug Restored and used for many years .Good luck

the whitewalls on that Cub brought to mind the movie quote about whitewalls. just sharing a smile. hope you get the Cub running again.

is that a Wheel Horse pictured behind the Cub? Wow, nice-looking machine.

cheers,
Yes, that is a 75 Wheelhorse B-80. Just finished restoring.

This O-cub is/was gonna be next. Just not sure I want to do it anymore. Seems like it just needs too much to get it back where I would want it to be.

Was one of those purchases I saw decided I had to have. Cause it was an Original.

Probably get it running then decide if I want to keep it. Be easier to sell a runner for sure.

Not giving up yet. Just questioning the utility of the project overall.

Prior to really doing anything it was hard to spin the crank, but that was with the odd belt configuration used to drive the mower deck. Once that belt was off, very easy to spin.

Fairly familiar with the motor, as its the same base motor as the wheelhorse I have.

Dont know the compression of that one, never had to check it.

Probably do a partial tear down today. See whats what.

Part of the problem with small engines today, is a lack of machine shops that will bring em back to life.

Might just be the head gasket.

Gotta measure the bore for out of round, but nothing looks bad enough to prevent operation, other then that head gasket, looks like blow by all around the exhaust port.

Neither port is stuck, and both will hold onto a napkin when closed.

Again probably some wear, but nothing other then the gasket as far as I can see visually to keep it from making compression.

That yellowish crud buildup is puzzling me ..anybody ever seen that before,(other than mud wasp) it looks very crusty...At any rate a quick fix on valve seats..open valve and a spin around with wire wheel dremel will get most the crud off seat and valve

Cylinder bore is beyond wear limit at some points.

Per the manual :

original bore was : 2.938

max wear limit : 2.941

max out of round : .003

max taper : .003

Here is what I have, measurements taken near the top, the center, and near the bottom, in 3 indexes around the circle (exhaust, intake, middl) is what I am calling the index locations.

Int Exh Mid

top. 2.942 2.941 2.943

Center. 2.940 2.942 2.940

bottom 2.940 2.943 2.941

Is the motor just beyond useful life. And I need to scrap it, or machine the bore?

Think it will run with a new gasket?

I just want it to run.

It has no useful implements, so its not like its gonna be used for work anymore.
