A good friend of mine has owned this tractor since new 80’s he says. Used it till 5 years ago when it ( he said) would run good then quit after a few minutes asked him if he had ever changed fuel filter and said all he ever put on it was a starter and new oil and filter. I’m apprehensive about taking on this project here are the reasons or questions. What happens when a Diesel engine sets up for 5 years. Could trying to run the engine with a clogged filter damage the injector pump? He also informed me that the hydraulic steering gear leaks, can this be rebuilt? It has been a refuge for rodents for several years as well. Also he is willing to let me work it off in labor as he is in his 90s and I already do yard work for him this is what he proposed to me $1200 40hrs.@$30.00 per hour. I would like some constructive feedback as I’m unsure what to do and what I could be getting myself into.

The other guys can chime in on the details of the diesel as I know more about putting a rocket into space as those...
The way I see it, if you were laying out cash, $1200 is steep, especially not running. But if you're looking at it from trade for your labor helping an old guy out?...that might be a different story. You don't see too many of the diesels around. Also, I assume the vac comes with it...any other attachments?
 
Rebuild kit for the steering column is about $90. The first thing I would do to try to get it to run is replace all of the fuel filters, and remove the tank and clean both of the shutoff valves, as the screens in them tend to get clogged with goo and then it won't run.

Well, $1200 seems rather steep to me if you need to work on it to get it running. But then again, you're not really laying out cash for it, just your time and labor.
Like I said, diesels are rare, at least here that I can see...sooooooo...if it were me, I'd jump on it. At least I'd have it and the satisfaction of helping an old fart out. 👍😎👍

Looks like you will have your work cut out for you in both cases.
I agree, go through the whole fuel system first including replacement of all the fuel lines as they will probably be hard as a rock.

$30/hr for yard work....geesh!
Never in my life had a job that paid that much.
Go for it before someone else does
 
1. It has a plastic fuel tank , drain it and flush it out . Over time diesel fuel will jelly in a plastic tank.
2. Remove the valve in the bottom of the tank and clean it with fresh fuel. Blow it out and return to tank.
3. Remove fuel line to the filter and blow it out , replace.
4. Replace fuel filter
5. Remove fuel line to second filter and blow out.
6. Put some fuel in the tank and open tank valve.
7. Turn on switch and see if the electric fuel pump will work and pump fuel to the end of the open line
8. If it does replace replace second filter, if it does not pump fuel replace pump.
9. Remove and clean line to injector pump. Prime line to injector with fuel pump.

When a diesel starts cuts off it is starving for fuel. You may have to crack the line to the injectors and bleed them while trying to start . When the bubbles stop and fuel runs out tighten the line Maybe a 2 -3 hr job if you have everything .
While you are at it it maybe a good idea to replace all rubber fuel lines .

Great info this is exactly what I need to get started. Im now exited to get it running I love old things and the first time I saw this tractor I told him I wanted it and have been contemplating the purchase just can’t see where it would fit in my line up, guess im just going to take him up on it and worry about the rest later. The fact that it’s a diesel is why im so interested.
 
I wish I had a suitcase of cash and a big shop he has a ton of equipment and has come to the realization that his family will just give everything away for nothing. I hope I never have that problem.
