A guy I work with gave me a old 149 with no compression and he explained to me his son was mowing with it last year when all of a sudden the engine went wide open and went bang.
Long storry short would a internal govonor breaking cause a piston to explode when the engine revs so fast?
Next question is do I need to replace the govoner if I am not using it to mow with?I just want full control for riding around with no load.

They always run their best right before they explode!!!

Scott W.,
My 149 did the same thing last summer. After looking at mine when it was apart, I believe mine had the piston start to break apart before a piece finally took out the governor. Mine has wear marks on the sidewall of the bore that made me come to this conslusion. After mine went wild, I was still able to drive it to my shed but only at an idle. Anything much above that and she would run wild again.
