There are charts on the web and most fastener suppliers that show what drill and taps are needed. Both metric and standard. Heli-coils can be used in some instances.
Next size up would be a 5/16" screw
The originals were 1/4 x 20 TPI and req'd a 7/32" drill
The 5/16 x 18 tap takes a letter drill size J
and if you go 5/16 x 24 you need a 9.32" drill
