I think 14 ga would work. OEM might have been 16 ga ( slightly smaller diameter) but bigger is better, but 12 ga not necessary.
 
To add to what Dennis said, battery, ground, and cable from solenoid to starter/generator should be 6 gauge. I think originally those were 8, but that is marginal in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum!
Color coded wiring (using different colors), helps also. Red for battery, yellow for lights, etc.
I am almost positive Roland's diagrams use factory colors for the wiring.
