The neck on this otherwise good tank is hammered and attempts to get it back into shape are not going too well, do the replacement caps have a cork gasket or something that might seal a bit if I get the fill hole on the tank a bit straight?

You can get cork and rubber cap gaskets at your local hardware store.
BILL - The cork used to make gaskets is decayed tree bark, it's brittle, it will crumble between your finger tips if you flex it too much. If your cork replacement gasket starts deteriorating, it will end up in your gas tank. Nothing good results from that.
VITON normally is used for seals and gaskets intended for gasoline contact, but good luck finding a known Viton gas cap gasket. Buna-N rubber also has very good resistance to gasoline and is cheaper and much easier to find at your local hardware or auto parts store.
