Hello, my name is Nick. Been on the forum years ago but new this time around. I have a Red Cub Cadet 582 which I purchased new in May 1981. After 42 years of great service and the engine still running strong, my PTO quit on me the other day. Is it difficult to remove the PTO clutch on this model? I have seen on You Tube where sometimes PTO clutches are hard to remove. Any advice would be appreciated. The engine is Briggs 16 HP. The Cub has always been kept in the garage and routine maintenance.

You might want to check for a broken wire, fuse, switch and then see what you really need.
You field assembly might be all that's bad and no part of an E PTO is hard to deal with.

Here is a stock picture of a Cub Cadet 582 Special. Mine looks as good as this after 42 years of service. I have the Cub 582 , not the Special as shown in the photo. I lost all my photos on my computer. I sure hope I can get this PTO going again because there is nothing like this machine on the market today. I am not good with electricity but I did check the battery this morning with a multimeter and it is good. Next I will get someone to help me check the switch and other parts as Digger suggested.

Does the PTO come on at all? If it engages initially, but does not stay on, it could be the seat safety switch or seat switch circuit issue. Also, if the charging system is not functioning well or at all, there will not be enough current to keep the PTO engaged.
