Just bought a portable compressor that has cig. lighter plug , would it do any damage if it cut that off and hook directly to battery when needed ?

The cigarette lighter circuit would be limited by the fuse amperage rating of that circuit versus direct connection to the battery terminals, but you will have absolutely no protection if there is an overload, or short circuit. Things can get interesting very quickly.

I bought one of those portable compressors, cut off the cig plug connector, and put alligator clips on it so I could air up a tire in my shed if needed. Sounds similar to what you want to do?

Yes you can cut the lighter plug off and replace it with alligator clips no problem..Just make shure you do not get the + and - wires mixed up.. The one going to the center of the lighter plug is +
