My tractor came with a 102 decal and I have no reason to think it not a 102....looks like any 102 seen on these pages. Thought my serial number is 202431, embossed on the rear of the axle/trans case....but seemingly not according to the graphic I found. Read somewhere where the s/n is under the seat. Took the seat off to raise it up some, it does not flip up like on the 103 and 123. No s/n. Do not remove this seat unless you have the patience of Job.
So, I guess 202431 is the axle s/n. Can only find numbers on the engine which I think is Kohler K241....uppermost on the tag is #01 5164 and just below it is #463299. Numbers are hard to read.
Where do I find the s/n for this tractor?

Tractor has all-gear trans, 1,2 3 speeds plus rev.
Engine will blow some blue smoke on startup. Think the adjustable carb is oem, I stick to suggested settings. I see confusing suggestions for spark plug gap. now installing a new Champion set at .022, I see .035 on the forum, a big difference. Also going to test the dist points which ought to be .020.

Been reading about engine knock but not a problem here. Were102's all built in '66? I understand it's a popular model, perhaps due to all-gear drive. Maybe they were also built in '67, '68 and so on.

Help and Cheers

Serial number is correct for that series, 71, 102, 122, 123, built 1965-1967, as for the motor I think the first number is wrong.

According to the manual, the spark plug gap should be set at .025" and the points gap set at .020.
Is the tank clean on the inside? How old is the gas? Has the carb been cleaned or rebuilt? The smoke on starting may just be the fuel, or dirty carb. The carb may be adjusted too lean, which could also cause this.
Any pics of the whole tractor? We love to see them!

I'm cornfused about #202431, it not listed in the the graphic in my third pix. I think you know more than me, is there something else from Louisville Works that I'm missing.
Not for nothing, a couple weeks ago I was on the CC corporate site....not surprising they don't recognize 202431....maybe just recognize numbers from 1981 onward.
Thanks for responding.
Cheers

Lewis is correct, built between May and June of 1967. This should help explain it, note where the yellow rectangles intersect, that number, #197727, is the starting serial number for the month of May in 1967 that number is before your #202431. The next month, June starts with #202724 which is after your #202431, so, your #202431 was built in May of 1967.

Note also, the 102 did not come with a flip up seat, also, there was never a model 103. The series that your 102 is part of, has the following models: 71, 102, 122 and 123, as LEwis mentioned in his first post above. Here's a photo of a 102:

Thanks Lewis and Kraig,
I read somewhere that the 102 is the most popular model. True? Do you know how many Cubs (all models) were built up till 1981? My 102 has headlights which I love.

With a little math, and some averaging, you can even figure out the approximate day it was made!
Your # is: 202431.
May of 67' serial #'s start at 197727 and end with 202723. (Since #202724 is the first # for June.)
Subtract 197727 from 202723, and you have 4996 total cubs made in the month of May. Look up May of 67', and you will see there were 23 working days in May. (Mon. thru Fri.)
4996 cubs divided by 23 working days = 217.2 cubs per day.
REMEMBER, this is averages, so you can figure plus or minus a tractor or two.
Since 202431 is real close to the ending serial # for May, we will subtract the daily production number from it.
202723 - 217 = 202506.
202431 is below that, so we will subtract one more day. 202506 - 217 = 202289.
Now, # 202431 is more than the beginning number, so we know this tractor was made on the next to last working day of May.
This would be Tuesday, May 30th of 1967.

Thanks Marty. I should have been able to figure it out but thought, those guys know everything, I'll just ask em.'
Decals go on today and I'll be done.
Cheers, Jack
