I made a clutch spring compressor out of 2 pieces of all-thread and 2 pieces of angle steel.
Matt's is much safer to use, with mine I nearly took my head off. I still have it but won't use it again. Charlie's seams way safer than mine too. I'm afraid of posting a pic as someone would copy and hurt themselves.
Its as shady as it sounds.

Jonathan, be careful.

Ok, Let me get this Straight,,, "Harlow" would be Little Steve's (Steve III) Great Grandfather???

Wow,,, What a Great Pic,,, How Very Fortunate You Are!!!
I noticed from your (1978/79) pic we are Close in age.
I was 10yrs old in 79 and grew up as an "Inner City" kid,,,
No one in my family had any land, or even much of a yard for that matter,,, Still to this day I've never been introduced to an agricultural or (garden) type environment....

Whether it's just a small 4 row plot, in my backyard with some of that - as Doug A would put it "Delicious Silver Queen/Bi Color" or BPD's next crop rotation, or Both,,, 149 will break ground!!!

Your 4th generation pic w/ Little Steve at the wheel of that fine looking cub, Full of Front Weight, is one to Cherish!!!!

Thanks for the pictures everyone . should have asked a while ago. I couldn't picture what the top looked like to bolt it in. I think I'm going to use a long grade 8 bolt for the thread. what size should I get 9/16 or 5/8 ? think that would be ok. thanks again

Jonathan,
I used 1/2-13 all thread. Welded a nut on the end to use a wrench to adjust.

Grade 8 is massive overkill for that. Grade 5 would be plenty sufficient.

Edit:

I would also weld a sleeve on the end of the bolt that fits over the front end of the driveshaft to keep the bolt and driveshaft in line. The way the back of the driveshaft is held does not appear to keep it from moving out of line far enough to slip off the end of the bolt.

Jonathan-

Why don't you just go to Matt Gs website and make one of his designs? I've made 3 so far...one for a friend and I still have two here. They work great. I think all I had at the time was 3/4" threaded rod which is a little heavy but it works. It also has the safety design with a bolt to make sure the drive shaft doesn't come out while pressing the spring.

And I agree about grade 8 being overkill.

.

I made one of those but found it was just as easy to do them in a vise w/soft aluminum covers for the jaws. Just a couple smacks w/a brass drift and the spirol pins will knock right out.

Just have to remember to slowly release the pressure is all.

Very cool old family picture Steve. Today, for those who know us, is my son Pat's 24th birthday. Been a LOT of Plow Days!
