Dave - The one all by itself, second picture is an early W-9. Last picture, cab tractor is the end of that model line, a 650. Looks like a diesel. The two side-by-side are a W-9 gas on the left, another 650 diesel on the right. The three in front of the house are all 650's, diesel on the left, LP in the middle and gasoline on the right. Tractordata says IH only built 4933 total in 1956 to 1958, strange to see so many with a couple W-9's all in the same place. I think the rounded flat top fenders signify Riceland equipment, so the must have been a really big rice plantation around there.

Neighbor across the road bought a gas W-9 about 1963 to take some of the load off his 560 gas farming 320 acres. His only other tractors were two worthless 8N Fords and a Cub Farmall he mowed his lawn with. Dad kinda followed his lead, bought JD R diesel when he thought he was getting another 160 acres 20 miles away. I did most of the plowing with it spring of '64, what a TERRIBLE machine to run! I never remember Dad running it, I still had 16 acres left to plow when the township road commissioner made Dad's problem His! Township knocked the PTO out three times in three years and unloaded it. What an absolute piece of junk. A W-9, Super W-9, 600,650 would have been worlds better.

I think my cousin may have a W-9, I'll have to have a better look at it. It's setting in some tall weeds waiting to be restored. He's been buying a bunch of old tractors in recent years and fixing them up.

Two problems with the W-9 was it drank gas like crazy, ( at today’s gas prices you probably couldn’t afford to drive one in a parade), the other problem was the seat was mounted low in the back. You sat down in the dirtiest location with the wind blowing the dirt off the tires right in your face and the heat was unbearable. Other than that it was a working monster.

I kinda liked the one w/the cab.
Would that have been IH built and installed also??
Puts me in mind of some of the steamers I saw at Rollag, MN last year.

Got me another cab delivered today!!!
I tried to buy the 149 it was on, but he wouldn't have any of that. ;-(

Charlie,

Nice!

David S,

That cab on the 650 is an Aftermarket add-on. IH didn't have a cab design of their own back then. That didn't happen until the introduction of the Series 86 tractors in 1976 and the all new Control Center, which were built in the East Moline plant and shipped to Farmall. They did have factory installed cab options on the 06, 26/56 and 66 Series tractors and maybe even the 4/560 Series but those were made by outside vendors. The 66 Series cabs were more integrated with the tractor than prior factory cabs with iso-mounts, unique floor deck & battery supports and the A/C compressor fitted nicely under the hood at the front of the 400 Series engine.

the cab on the one 650 was a factory built cab, but not an IH factory. Lot of small cab manufacturers in the upper midwest.

Richard - Back when those W-9 and 600/650's were being used gasoline was much cheaper. Less than a Quarter per gallon. The 450 Dad had that I ran ALOT from 1965 to 1968 was pretty thirsty. One spring break I burned almost all of our 350 gallon gas barrel single-handed with that tractor. If I started around 7 am I had to stop early for lunch to gas up. Then about 5-6 pm I needed more gas, 2-3 5-gallon cans or make a quick dash back to the barrel in the barnyard. The 450 burned 4-5 gallon per hour with a 21 gallon tank. But we had good weather, nine straight days of fieldwork, I disked almost 200 acres, 40 acres of it twice, plowed about 140-150 acres. We went from no fieldwork done to 40 acres of oats sowed and ready to plant corn in nine days. With good weather we could plant our 100 acres of corn at home in 3 days, and the 80 acres on the other farm in one big day.
Dad replaced that 450 with a green tractor, it was bigger but in nine days we would have normally had over two days of breakdowns. It was a diesel, so a 34 gallon tank of fuel lasted between 7 and 8 hours unless it broke down first. Dad was referring to IT when he said,"I always try to keep one of those damned green things around to remind me to NEVER buy another one!" We'd spent most of the day working on it instead of doing fieldwork.

Nice catch Charlie!

Here are some pics of my find yesterday.
Had to find some donor wheels so I could get it off of the back of my S-10.

Marty-

Great find! I think there were all sorts of handle configurations given to the nf hydraulic system. I have even thought about how to make the handle easier to access.

The 124 is one of my favorites...that's why I have 3 of the darn things now.

That unit looks to be very restorable. I hope you don't plan to part it. Heck, build that barn and set it aside until you can work your mojo.

.

Actually there was only one handle configuration for Cub Cadets.
There are how ever many other setups like Wayne said.

David. Nice group of standards you took pictures of. Dad has a gas and diesel 650. Would like to find a propane to finish the set.

Marty, nice find!

Ethan, I don't have a higher resolution version. I can email it but I have to ask, is there a reason you can't right click and save it?

Kraig-I’m the oldest young person in America...I don’t have a home computer and I can figure out how to download a picture on my I phone but I can sent the picture to a computer when I go to the library

Ethan, ah! I have sent it off to you.
