Jason - now you've gone and done it. You not only noticed a difference in the wiring mounting but you also noticed the hood hinge to upper grill housing of my 169 is mounted different than Marty's 128. I have to assume BOTH OF MINE are correct, but I'm gonna have to look tonite.

I believe the 1x8/9 upper grill housing actually has a little recessed area in the lower part so the hinge fits up against it and then the light panel (or blank out plate) can mount flush. I'm wondering how Marty's fits/looks on the front side.

Also, the parts list for the lights shows 3 wiring clips and if you look really hard you can actually see all 3 in my pic. One is at the upper center bolt, one at the bottom center bolt, and the 3rd is on the far right bolt providing the ground connection (it's partially obscured by the date on my pic). This wiring difference could be something that IH changed in the production run or maybe factory vs non-factory installed.

Jeremiah - hey that's a great write up on the coil/condenser/points/spark plug operation. I never heard it put that way before and it really helps me understand better (Jason probably didn't know I'm just a shade tree mechanic and replace parts without really diagnosing them).

Jason - one more thing, since you're really good at your welding, here's something you might want to look into (maybe you already saw this). I think the brakes were modified too, and yes it's a 149. Somehow I think your wife would like this version.

Here's my missing light panel:

308152.jpg

And it appears that my 149 lights were grounded at the grill housing frame bolts by the PO or Factory?

Jason - there's something amiss with your grounding wire going all the way back to your frame. I don't think it's factory.

I also noticed in your pic that you have the blade/brake PTO so your 149 must be a later production unit.

Now, about the extended and modified frame 149 in the pic - it's got a Cummin's diesel in it, so on 2nd thought it'd probably be to noisy for your wife. I do wonder how big a mowing deck you could put under it tho?

Hey - nice to see your other tire is arriving tomorrow. Your next discussions should be:
"how to install chains?" and
"should they be tight, slightly loose, or loose enough to clang on the inner fender"

This is after your discussions about the gauge wheels on your mowing deck rubbing those spanking new skins.

Well Jason and Marty - I just confirmed my headlight panel is installed correctly. There is a recessed area for the hinge in the upper grill housing for the hinge which allows the headlight panel to fit flat. Marty, I suppose the correct police will be after you soon.
Ooh, and Jason, since you rounded the edges of your hinge you're gonna have a little gap on each side where the light panel fits against it which you'll see from the front side.

Hydro -

My 149 hood extension is "recessed" for hinge flange also......

It does appear that my 149 hood extension was designed so the headlight panel would mount flush when installed on top of hinge flange.

General QL question-

Does anyone know exactly how IH grounded the engine on a QL? The 1200 I'm working on only has one small wire going from a shroud bolt to a mounting bolt of the "firewall" on the right side. Should I run another from a starter mounting bolt to a grill mounting hole like the 1x8/9s? It ohms out just fine now but it doesn't seem like much of a ground system the way it is.

TIA

.

Wayne, It all depends on the serial number.
Early units were grounded w/a short heavy wire from one of the starter bolts directly to one of the 3/8" grill mount bolts.

Later model machines used a smaller gage wire, as you describe, to the 1/4" bolt for the firewall mount to frame. One thing I also noted on these late Cubs was the rerouting of the wire loom through a grommet in the firewall as opposed to going UNDER the firwall in the earlier version, plus the later ones switched to an aluminum lower grill, and also somewhere there was a change made in the headlamp screen from vertical rows of holes to diagonal rows of holes. I have both versions, early and late.

Confused yet!!

Wayne-
Earlier models ran the ground from the starter to the grill. Later ones went from the engine to the frame through the firewall grommet. Some say it was changed when the cast aluminum grill came out. Mid 76 maybe?
Edit- David beat me to it.

Wayne - that's an interesting general question you posted about the late version QL units just having the little ground wire. I wondered about that myself for quite sometime. Never had a problem with grounding but having the rubber ISO-mounts the engine is basically isolated from the frame, and since the engine rocks back/forth running there must be pull on that ground wire. Sure seems like IH would'a had something more based on what they did with the older units - and those units were bolted directly to the frame as well.

Thanks David, Doug, and you too Hydro-

This is a '79 model with the aluminum grill so it all makes sense. I may still run a heavier wire to one of the grill bolts from one of the starter mount bolts though.

I just took it out for a test run and to warm the head up for re-torquing once cooled. It runs great and the gentleman should be happy. I know he's anxious to get it back.

QLs are good tractors and fun to drive but I'll still take a 1x8/9 any day. They can actually be fun to work on vs the QLs.

Here's a pic of the 1200 in front of the squrrel cage fan cooling down.

Some time I will list what all I had to do to this unit. The main reason he brought it to me was to get the carb right. Now, over a month later, I'll be glad to watch it go down the driveway.

Sounds like me, Wayne!
I get to working on one and start seeing all the things that need/could/should be done/improved/repaired and I can't just leave well enough alone!

BTW, Hydro... The 126 and Hyd lift & creeper drew quite a few comments at the show I ws at over the weekend, even though we/the Cubs were scattered all over the show and swap areas. Local show coming up this weekend and I KNOW that Cubs will be well represented and more than likely be all in the same row together.

Wayne - since that 1200 is a late production unit I'm wondering if the hood rest (against the dash) has 2 of those long square shaped rubber rests. That was one of the best changes IH ever made and I wish they would have made a retrofit plate to use them on the 1x8/9 series. They did use the same long square rubbers on the underside of the seat tray for the 82 series instead of those round rubber bumpers that eventually tear off. Unfortunately the long square rubbers are NLA today.

And one final thing Wayne - lets be real careful. That 1200 with no mowing deck and no weight on the front will pop wheelies really easy. BTDT got the unexpected scare but didn't break the axle.

David - glad to hear your 126 drew a lot of comments. I'm assuming you did find your tin dash plate that had been misplaced. You know what the say on here:

Ok, I went and took some pics for you. Can you see the crack?

308228.jpg

308229.jpg

Unless you pull out the flashlight and magnifying glasses, you can't see it.

I tried to keep the tractor as close to original as possible, including what got painted and what did not.

This is the reason I put the hinge inside:
So you wouldn't see the shiny edge of the hinge at the bottom of the light panel on the outside.

Harry, yeah, I finally found the dash tin. But the Maple Hunter decal sucks!
Too small in some places and too big in others.
You can still see part of the little turtle and bunny raggit of the original tin cuz the decal is about 1/8 to 3/16" too small all the way around the throttle slot, same on both lower corners and too much decal hanging off the lower center.

Hey Marty your 128 pics are always a welcome sight on this end. One of the cleanest lookin cubs I've seen. Except for that one pic w/ planter mounted on back. Had a lil dirt on them ag's. Although your headlight pic looks show room new, the pristine 128 w/ planter & ag's full of dirt is by far my fav!

David,

Sorry to hear about the decal, that's disappointing news.
Have you contacted them about it? May be worth your while.

Jason,

Thanks for the compliments. The 128 is not all that clean, it has been playing in the dirt for some time now.
I hope to start on one of my 100s as soon as I get the 122 up and running and sold to make room.

Anywhere someone wants to put their hinge is fine with me, I just like mine hid from the outside since it was not painted.
Sure would like to see some pics of David's hinge along with the rest of his tractor. I don't think he has shown any yet.
Come on David, show some. Please!
