Hi All

1983 682 with 44c deck I called local cub dealer for deck belt his part # was 954-3003A 5/8"x89 1/2"this belt is to long so I called back and he assures me this is the correct belt so I look in sponsors above and found part # 754-3027 1/2" x 86" Also I thought I looked at all FAQ's what is the correct part # for this belt or where can I look to find the correct part #
If I don't respond back soon I will be out of town until the 18th and I am going to need to mow when I get back and would like to find a belt

THANKS for the help

The pto-to-deck belt is 954-3003A which is
5/8 x 89 1/2. The deck belt is 954-3004 which is 1/2 x 77 something. Which do you actually need? He probably thinks you need the pto belt. There are older part numbers but these are those most recent.

Anthony C: A better response would have been to ask you what the serial number of your 682 is. Early 682's 665,001-821,059 use a 954-3071(5/8 x 88.5") PTO belt. However, tractors beginning with Ser# 800,000 - 821,059 would likely have had a 954-3003A (5/8 x 72") PTO belt. If the dealer is telling you a 954-3003A is 89.5", please find another dealer, per my official Cub Cadet Belt/Blade guide.

The deck spindle belt is a 954-3004 (1/2 x 77 1/2") as previously noted.

Anthony C:

I have looked into the holy grail of parts books, the CPE-2.

According to CPE-2, these are the correct belts for a 682 w/44C deck:

Deck Belt: 954-3004
PTO Belt: 954-3003A

Arrrgh..The tractor serial numbers are the key here...see the 44C page extracted from the Cub Cadet Belt & Blade Guide of 2001...

This may not apply but on some of the late 82 series/pre cyclops models, there are 2 sets of holes where the subframe bolts to the front hanger. If it is in the front hole and the 954-3003a is too long, move it to the more rearward holes. The holes at the far rear are for Super GTs.

Myron,
Your belt guide must have a misprint because that 954-3003A should be about 89" long. My 782/44C has a 5L890W belt on it which is 5/8" by 89".
72" would be way too short.
Under edit;
I just looked on the size chart on the ACROSS THE STREET site and it shows 72" also and I still say it is a misprint.

Todd, Roland, Anthony C...And that 72" length is definitely a misprint. I have several 954-3003A belts in stock, so I measured one. Operating length is 88.5". Now, the question is what is the difference between a 954-3071 and a 954-3003A?? Both are listed as 5/8 x 88.5". These are current MTD belt numbers and MTD does not give two part numbers to the exact same part. That page I posted definitely shows that they think that you might have to use one belt over the other...so there has gotta be a difference.

I figured one would be listed at 21/32 vs 5/8 or perhaps as a "B Section". Not so and thus far, I haven't determined the difference.

Todd, Anthony C. Defininely that subframe mounting point should be checked as well. The very front holes are for the 38" deck per the bulletins and certainly would give Anthony a "too long" situation using a 954-3003A (or 954-3071). And further, I note in the service bulletins that some tractors came off the assembly line that would have had a deck double pully with the top section a bit too narrow and the PTO belts don't ride in the pulley as intended resulting a "too short" belt. A substitute pulley is prescribed in this case.

If some one knows the difference in those two belts, please post it for all.

This is definitely a little confusing. I've had a very early 782, late 682, 782, and 1811. All have used 934-3003A for pto belt and 954-3004 for deck belt. Good point with the subframe holes. I borrowed a belt one day from one tractor to the other and it wouldn't work til i realized the subframe holes were wrong on the recipient tractor. That particular subframe was bought used of someone and I'm not sure what model tractor it was on.

Anthony, Adrian, & Myron:

YUP....this is all very confusing.

I spent some time this morning and did some research in my library as well as online.

Starting with the original belt as listed in the CPE-2 Parts book, the original belt was listed as IH-135469-C1

Now here is the succession of that part;
135469C1 ---> 754-3003 ---> 754-3003A ---> 954-3003A

Now, I can not find where the 954-3071 belt was used, in that according to the Cub Cadet Web Site, this part is No Longer Available.

It would "appear" that the 954-3003A and 954-3071 were close in design dimensions (5/8 x 88-1/2 vs 5/8 x 89). It would be logical to cut costs and reduce inventory by eliminating a part that is close to another part as far as specifications. Thus I would assuming, that the 954-3071 was deleted in that the 1/2" could easily used and made up by adjustments.

Guys THANKS for your help and input I will double check when I get home this evening I have 954-3003A here in front of me I will try it again sometimes I have a brain fart. Is any one going to portland this weekend to the engine show I here they have a lot of cub parts and ECT I would like to find a sleeve hitch and plow for my 682

Anthony

Myron,
954-3003A is a 5/8 x 89.5" belt
954-3071 is a 5/8 x 88.5" belt
Both are still available from cub but I can not find what the 3071 belt is used on.

Myron
I took this 954-3003A belt back home and SORRY but yes this is the correct belt what happened was the release spring on the mule drive came loose and the drive came down a bit and at first I did not notice it after I put it back together it was fine and also that probably was the reason the belt got shredded the spring felt ok but would you suggest to change it. Thanks again for everyones help and input

Anthony

Does anyone have a belt deck diagram for a 682? Or picture of how it is on their deck? Have looked around the internet and can't find any. Neither deck nor pto belt were on the machine when purchased.

Wade, WELCOME!

Here's a photo from a mower deck manual that shows how the drive belt is routed from the tractor PTO to the mower deck center pulley:

Here's an exploded parts view that shows how the spindle belt is routed:
